VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's basketball team fell for the second time in ODAC play on Wednesday night by a final score of 62-38 against Virginia Wesleyan.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Both teams exchanged scores for the first eight minutes of play for a 10-9 Marlins' (11-2, 4-0 ODAC) lead to that point. VWU opened the contest shooting 3-of-12 from the field to 4-for-10 from the Generals (3-9, 1-2 ODAC), with junior
Colin Ryan knocking down a three at the 11:57 mark to make it a 10-9 game.
The Generals went cold for the rest of the first half, however, making just 1-of-8 of their field goal attempts, as the Marlins closed out the half on a 16-5 run for a 26-14 lead at the break.
Ryan led the early second-half charge for the Blue and White, scoring nine of the team's 16 points through the next 10 minutes of action to help his side cut the Marlins' lead down to 37-30. Virginia Wesleyan then bounced back by scoring 12 straight points, which was part of an overall 20-2 run over the next five minutes to put themselves up 57-32 with four minutes to play.
TOP PERFORMERS:
Ryan had the top scoring game for the Blue and White at 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor, plus six rebounds. First-year
Connor Amorosi tallied 10 points, five rebounds and a steal, with five of his points coming on six free throw attempts. First-year
Zack Duncan played a season-high 26 minutes off the bench and added six points.
The Marlins were led by Khai Seargeant, who scored 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Omari Deveaux followed with 13 points and five rebounds, while Amari Moorer notched 11 points and nine rebounds. Demeir Pollard rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 more points, and Paul Anderson came in just behind Moorer with eight rebounds.
TEAM STATS:
Virginia Wesleyan made 34.5 percent (20-58) of its shots in the game, helped by a mark of 42.3 percent (11-26) in the second half, while holding W&L to 24.5 percent (12-49) shooting overall. The Generals went to the free throw line 13 times and sank 11 shots for a 0.846 percentage.
The Marlins held additional scoring advantage in the game from points off turnovers (18-6), second-chance points (11-7), bench points (16-13) and points in the paint (22-14).
