2024 Baseball ODAC Tournament Preview

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee University baseball team earned the eighth seed in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball tournament and will take on top-seeded and nationally ranked Randolph-Macon College in the opening series on May 3-4.

The Blue and White finished the regular season with an overall record of 16-17 and a 10-12 mark in conference play. This marks the fourth straight season that the Generals have secured their spot in the playoffs. W&L capped off their 2024 regular season campaign on Apr. 27 as they split a conference doubleheader with Virginia Wesleyan University to lock up the eighth seed in the tournament.

20th-ranked Randolph-Macon earned the top seed for the tournament after posting a 16-6 record in ODAC play while Roanoke College, Shenandoah University and the University of Lynchburg round out the top four teams. The opening series of the ODAC Tournament will be held at the top four seeds with the Yellow Jackets playing host to W&L for a best-of-three series. Bridgewater College, Guilford College and Virginia Welseyan University claimed the fifth, sixth and seventh spot in the tournament. 

No. 20 Randolph-Macon (26-11, 16-6 ODAC) will host the Blue and White in the opening series this Friday and Saturday. The two will rematch after a doubleheader split earlier this season on Mar. 16; after the Generals claimed a 6-4 win in game one, the Yellow Jackets offense came alive in game two to take down the Generals 18-4.


Junior catcher Campbell Charneco has been the primary leader behind the plate, playing in 30 of the Blue and White's 33 games this season. Charneco ranks second on the team with .342 batting average while slugging .517 with an on-base percentage of .438. In 120 at-bats this season, Charneco leads the team in home runs (4) and RBI (36) and ranks second in hits (41) and walks drawn (16). 
 
Paul Ramseur, Mason Satterfield and John Turner have been covering ground in the outfield for the Generals this season. Ramseur has spent all of his time in right field this season, he has batted .310 in 129 at-bats with 40 hits and a team-high 12 doubles and three triples. Ramseur has one home run on the season while driving in 22 runs. Satterfield has taken over the reigns in center field for the second half of the season. Satterfield has 14 hits with two doubles and has driven in six runs. Turner roams free in left field, he has 26 hits this season for a .317 batting average with five doubles, one triple and two home runs in 29 games.

In the infield, Drew Larsen has started every game at first base for the Generals this season. Larsen holds a .323 batting average in 133 at-bats with a team-high 43 hits. He has hit four doubles, one triple and three home runs this season, driving in 22 runs in the process. Ethan Zulueta has spent time at second base and shortstop this season, playing in 32 of the 33 games. Zulueta leads the team with a .344 batting average in 122 at-bats with 42 hits, seven doubles and one triple. He posted a 19-game hitting streak this season which spanned from Feb. 27 to Apr. 6, during that time frame he batted .473 with 35 hits in 74 at-bats while driving in 19 runs. Nick Lagges returned to the diamond after missing a portion of the season, he has a batting average of .338 in 71 at-bats with 24 hits and a team-high four home runs.  

Evan Blair and John Benner have been the top starting pitchers for the Generals this season. Blair ended the regular season with a 3-2 record on the mound with a 4.10 earned run average. He struck out 50 batters and has a .289 batting average against in 48.1 innings of work this season while holding left handed batters to only two hits and a .111 batting average. Benner has posted a 3-3 record this season in 42.2 innings of action. Benner has struck out 32 batters this season in 10 appearances, holding batters to a .277 batting average. Ben Sundell has been the Blue and White's top option out of the bullpen this season, making 16 appearances for a 2-1 record while recording three saves. The sophomore left-hander holds the second-lowest ERA on the team with a 1.78 ERA while punching out 36 batters in 30.1 innings of work.
 
The best-of-three opening series between the Generals and Yellow Jackets was pushed up due to anticipated rain on Sunday. Friday, May 3 will feature a single game at 3:30 p.m. at Hugh Stephens Field at Estes Park in Ashland, Va. The two teams will square off in game two on Saturday at noon and game three (if necessary) to start 30-45 minutes following. The winners of each opening series will move on to the double-elimination championship tournament on May 9-12 at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va.
