W&L Splits Twin Bill With Randolph-Macon

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team split a double header with Randolph-Macon College on Saturday as they defeated the Yellow Jackets 6-4 in game one before falling 18-4 in game two. 

GAME ONE | W&L 6, RMC 4
  • The Yellow Jackets (8-5, 3-1 ODAC) kicked off the scoring in the top of the 4th inning as Zach Wernoski doubled down the left field line, driving in Myles Webb and Chaz Harvey for a 2-0 lead. 
  • Randolph-Macon took a three-run lead in the 5th inning as Aaron Lautenschlarger roped a RBI-double down the left field line. 
  • In the bottom of the 5th, Campbell Charneco singled to kick off the inning before Andrew Thornton drew a walk to get two runners on. Charneco would come around to score as Jonathan French grounded out before Ethan Zulueta singled to bring in Thornton to cut the deficit to one. 
  • Zach Wernoski led off the inning with a single up the middle to start the 6th and came around to score on an error two batters later to put the Yellow Jackets up 4-2.
  • The Blue and White scored three runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to take their first lead of the afternoon. French led off the inning with a walk before coming around to score on an error which allowed John Turner to reach base. Campbell Charnceo singled to center field to bring in Turner before Thornton found a hole in left field, driving in Paul Ramseur
  • The Generals would take a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the 8th inning as Turner drove in Zach Senders on a single to center field. 
GAME TWO | RMC 18, W&L 4
  • The Yellow Jackets got their revenge in game two, taking down the Generals 18-4 to split the weekend doubleheader. Harvey drove in Schmitt with a single through the left side before Wernoski beat out an infield bunt to bring across Lautensch for an early 2-0 lead.
  • Two Randolph-Macon home runs in the second inning propelled them to a 7-0 lead. Lautensch blasted a two-run home run and Wernoski belted a three-run home run to left field. 
  • The Yellow Jackets drove in seven runs on four hits in the top of the third inning before the Generals drove across four runs in the bottom of the 5th. Following a triple, Jacob Jackson doubled down the left field line to drive in W&L's first run of the game. 
  • The next at-bat, Ramseur doubled to center field to drive in Jackson and Senders to cut the deficit to 11. Campbell Charneco drove in the final run of the inning as he singled to left field to bring the score to 14-4. 
  • RMC would extend their lead back to 14 as Schmitt singled up the middle, bringing in Brooks and Bush. 
  • Slevin singled down the right field line driving in Myers to put the Yellow Jackets up 17-4. RMC would score their final run of the game as Bush lined out to center field and Birchett scored from third base on the sacrifice fly. 

W&L GAME NOTES
  • Nathan DeWitte (1-0) earned his first win of the season as he pitched a shutout inning with one strikeout. Brody Pasieka picked up his third save of the season as he pitched three shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out three batters.
  • John Benner (1-2) earned the loss as he allowed seven runs (five earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out three batters in two innings of work in game two.
  • Campbell Charneco led the offense with a 5-for-8 (.625) effort at the plate with two RBIs. Ethan Zulueta and Nick Lagges were both 3-for-7 at the plate this afternoon. 
  • John Turner, Paul Ramseur and Charneco each drove in two runs. 

RANDOLPH-MACON GAME NOTES
  • Drew Ramos earned his third win of the season after five innings of work, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out three batters in game two.
  • Harvey was 5-for-10 (.500) at the plate this afternoon with two RBI. Wernoski drove in six batters in his seven at-bats this afternoon.

  • The Generals conclude their seven game home stand with the Southern Virginia University Knights on Tuesday, Mar. 19. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
