No. 6 Women's Lacrosse Edges Out an 11-9 Win Over No. 15 Roanoke

LEXINGTON, Va. - The sixth-ranked Washington and Lee University women's lacrosse team fought hard to carve out an 11-9 win over No. 15 Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon. 

The Generals (10-3, 6-0 ODAC) extend their winning-streak to nine consecutive games and remain perfect in ODAC play with the win over the Maroons (9-3, 4-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Five different Generals found the back of the net in the opening stanza with tallies from seniors Alex Petras, Julia Thomson, Hanna Bishop and Walker McKnight and sophomore Sophie Edwards
  • Petras scored first just 37 seconds into the contest. Edwards, standing behind the crease, found Petras rolling into the center of the fan for the first score.
  • Roanoke's Libby Bowman responded with the tying goal at 10:13, an unassisted mark driving from the top of the scoring area. 
  • On the ensuing draw and possession for W&L, Edwards regained the lead with a goal off of a crease roll.
  • After the first quarter W&L owned a 5-1 advantage. 
  • Roanoke responded with three unanswered goals in the second period and entered the midway point trailing 5-4. 
  • With a two-player advantage to start the second half, Maddie McDonald scored a free position tally for the visitors, and tied up the game 5-all.
  • Bishop responded with a go-ahead goal for W&L but the two teams traded the next six scores. 
  • W&L pulled away with the last goal in the third period for the 9-8 lead and back-to-back goals from McKnight and Thomson in the final stanza gave the home team a three-goal cushion for the remainder of the game. 
  • With 2:06 left to play on the board, Grace Koutouzis found Kate Loughran for RC to bring the game back within two goals.
  • The Generals forced a turnover after the next draw and ran out the remainder of the possession clock to seal the ODAC victory. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Generals outshot RC 29-24 and recorded 18 shots on goal.
  • Roanoke had a slight 15-14 advantage on ground balls picked up but W&L finished ahead on draw controls, 13-10. 
  • The Generals were successful on all but one clear, 18-of-19, and limited RC to a 16-of-20 success rate. 
  • The Blue and white caused 10 turnovers to Roanoke's eight. 

W&L LEADERS 

  • Senior goalie Caroline Kranich played all 60 minutes of action and made nine stops in the winning-effort. 
  • McKnight, Thomson and Bishop all registered hat tricks. 
  • Edwards added a pair of assists to her scoreline for three points. 
  • Thomson and Ginny Taylor each dished out one helper a-piece. 
  • Eugenie Rovegno grabbed three ground balls, a pair of caused turnovers and three draw controls. 
  • McKnight led W&L in draw controls with five and a pair of caused turnovers during RC clearing attempts.

RC LEADERS

  • Libby Bowman registered a hat trick off eight shots. 
  • Tiernan Connor added two goals and an assist for three points.
  • Natalie Mason caused the Generals to turn the ball over twice and grabbed three ground balls. 
  • Sophia Chickering controlled six of the game's 23 draws. 
  • Goalie Kyleigh Chickering made seven stops and allowed 11 goals against in the losing decision.
