No. 7 Women's Lacrosse Earns Program's First Win Over No. 10 TCNJ

SPARKS, Md. - The seventh-ranked Washington and Lee University women's lacrosse team earned a 16-9 nonconference win over the tenth-ranked College of New Jersey on Saturday night. 

The Generals (9-3) outscored the Lions (5-3) 10-3 in the opening half to earn the first victory over TCNJ in the ninth all-time meeting between to two programs. 

W&L saw nine different Generals score tallies in the Top 10 matchup at the USA Lacrosse Headquarters. The Generals registered their second win in as many seasons in Sparks, Maryland on Tierney Field. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Blue and White rattled off five goals to open up play from different scorers on each instance. 
  • Julia Thomson scored the initial mark when Sophia Cafferey found Thomson in transition with 12:46 on the clock The opening tally came on the heels of a forced Libby Ford turnover and ground ball during TCNJ's opening possession. Ford found Cafferey in the break-out option during the clear and a fast-break ensued for Thomson's scoring opportunity.
  • Thirty-three seconds later, off the next draw won by Cat Caples, Shannon Timoney found Sophie Edwards in the center of the eight-meter fan for the second goal of the game. 
  • On the next TCNJ possesion, Allie Doyle forced another Lion's turnover and Ford scooped up the loose ball. Off of the successful clearing attempt, Hanna Bishop found Timoney in transition for the third straight W&L goal to force the Lions to call a timeout at 11:11. 
  • At 7:28 Walker McKnight dished out a pass to Claire Horner for the fourth goal and Emma Marsh scored the fifth, from Sophie Edwards at 6:34.
  • TCNJ stopped the run with back-to-back Ally Tobler goals at 4:10 and again at 1:50 from a free position opportunity. 
  • In the second quarter, the Generals strung together five more goals from: Alex Petras, Ginny Taylor, Edwards, Bishop and Taylor again, in order for an 8-2 advantage with a minute left to play in the first half. 
  • Morgan Vaccaro scored off a CJ Kole assist with ten seconds on the clock to wrap up the stanza and give the Lions their third goal of the evening.
  • Out of the break, the two teams traded scores before back-to-back Kira Sides unassisted scores to bring the Lions within six goals at 12-6. 
  • The Generals went on a 3-0 run to start the final quarter using scores from Petras, Bishop and McKnight for a nine-goal lead, 15-6, with 9:08 to play.
  • Tobler and Kole scored three unanswered goals from the 8:28 to 7:17 mark before Thomson found Horner for her second goal of the night to finish W&L's evening. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Generals outshot TCNJ 40-18 and put 29 shots on target. 
  • Offensively, the Lions turned the ball over on 23 occasions to W&L's 18.
  • The Blue and White's transition held TCNJ to 19-of-27 successful clears and registered 17 caused turnovers on defense. 
  • W&L owned a 17-11 advantage in draw controls and TCNJ edged the Generals 23-17 in ground balls.

W&L LEADERS 

  • Caroline Kranich registered four saves and the ninth win of the year. 
  • Ford led the defense with three caused turnovers and a game-best six ground balls.
  • Eugenie Rovegno grabbed six draw controls and caused two turnovers.
  • Caples added four draws and McKnight recorded three DCs and five ground balls. 
  • Edwards register four points with a hat trick and an assist.
  • McKnight, Bishop Petras, Taylor and Horner all found the back of the net twice.
  • Bishop, Petras and Marsh each tallied a pair of helpers. Marsh's two assists were to Sophie Edwards in the center of the eight-meter fan. 

TCNJ LEADERS

  • Ally Tobler led all scorers with four goals and Sides and Kole added two each for the Lions. 
  • Tobler and Sides each registered three draw controls. 
  • Goalie Julia Charest scooped up six ground balls and made 13 stops in the full 60 minutes of action. 

UP NEXT

The Generals have no mid-week game this week but will return to Watt field to take on No. 15 Roanoke College on Saturday, April 6 at 11 a.m. for a league contest.
