Women's Lacrosse Downs Tufts in Top-5 Matchup

SPARKS, Md. - The No. 2/4* Washington and Lee University women's lacrosse squad downed No. 3/2* Tufts 16-5 on Tierney Field of the USA Lacrosse Headquarters on Saturday night.

The Generals (7-0) defense held the Jumbos (3-1) to just five goals in a career night for goalkeeper Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa. / Mercersburg).

Kranich posted 13 stops with a pair of ground balls and a caused turnover; the junior held the Jumbos to just four free position goals in 14 attempts and conceded just one goal out of the settled attack.

Tufts scored three of the first four goals to take a 3-1 lead with two minutes left in the opening stanza. The Blue and White responded with four straight goals to take a 5-3 lead off an unassisted goal from first-year Sophia Edwards (San Francisco, Calif. / St. Ignatius College Prep) at the 6:34 mark.

W&L outscored TU 6-1 in the second stanza and lhad the Jumbos doubled up at the break with an 8-4 advantage. Part of the six-goal second contributed to a 10-0 run that spanned from the 4:20 in the second to the 9:24 mark in the final quarter. Walker McKnight (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) scored the last two tallies in the spurt at 12:07 and 9:24 marks to go up by 10 then 11 goals, respectively to engage the running clock.

Seventeen of the games' 21 goals were unassisted tallies and 11 of those came from 8-meter opportunities. W&L was more efficient from the hash marks and combined for 7-of-10 attempts and had a 15-9 advantage on the draw circle.

Defensively, the Generals caused nine of Tufts' 14 turnovers and limited the Jumbos' offense to 18 shots on goal of their 23 takes. Eugenie Rovegno (Duxbury, Mass. / Duxbury) scooped up a game-high five ground balls, many of which were cleaning up loose balls from Kranich's saves.

In the offensive third, the Blue and White spread out the scoring amongst seven players and five had multi-point nights. McKnight tallied five goals on six shots which led both teams and Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y. / Bronxville) recorded another hat trick.

Cat Caples (Reistertown, Md. / St. Paul's School for Girls) dished out two assists during the 10-0 run and added seven draw controls in the center. Julia Thomson Larchmont, N.Y. / Hackley) added a pair of goals and an assist for three points.

The Generals will travel to Mary Washington (receiving votes in USA Lacrosse Poll) on Wednesday, March 22 at 4 p.m.
