No. 6 Women's Lacrosse Upsets No. 4 Salisbury 6-5 in Defensive Battle

LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 6 Washington and Lee University women's lacrosse team upset No. 4 Salisbury University by a score of 6-5 on a rainy Alston Parker Watt Field Saturday afternoon.

The Generals (3-0) stifled the Sea Gulls' (2-1) offense in the second half and climbed their way out of a 4-0 deficit suffered the first five minutes of action. W&L answered back with four unanswered tallies, all from different goal scorers to tie up the contest at 4-4 and scored one goal in the third and fourth quarters to take down SU at home on the back of a Walker McKnight (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) game-winning goal with just 1:56 left on the game clock.

Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Harriton) put the Blue and White on the scoreboard first at the 7:20 mark. McKnight found Shwab cutting through the 8-meter fan to break SU's 4-0 run.

Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y. / Bronxville) cut the Gull's lead in half with 1:50 left to play in the opening quarter. Bishop drove to her left toward the center of the fan, her shot ended up in the top corner.  After the first stanza, Salisbury led 4-2.

In the second, Jenny Lisovicz (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) drew in multiple defenders with a drive from the top of the critical scoring area and dished out a pass to Shannon Timoney (Menham, N.J. / West Morris Mendham) for the Generals' third straight goal. McKnight then converted a free position attempt from the right inside hash, her goal was placed in the upper-right corner and came at the 5:05 mark to tie up the contest 4-4.

Miranda Mears stopped the W&L surge and took the lead back for SU at the 1:50 mark. The Generals forced a turnover below the goal line extended but gave the ball right back, an errant pass fell at Mears' feet just outside of the crease. Mears was presented with a 1v1 with Generals goalkeeper, Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa. / Mercersburg), to put the 'Gulls ahead just before intermission.

Out of the halftime break, Coach Maddie Coleman's defense held firm and did not let up another goal. Both teams played outstanding defense throughout the remainder of the game but W&L was able to score one in each of the final quarters. Schwab's unassisted 8:35 goal equalized the game 5-5; the senior co-captain hesitated on her initial cut to create enough separation from her defender, then drove to her right for an open lane and slipped her shot around Kaitlin Hunsinger for her second point of the day.

W&L peppered 11 shots on Hunsinger in the third quarter alone, the keeper came up with three big saves in the stanza, of her 12 total, to keep SU in the contest. The two teams were held scoreless until McKnight tallied the game-winner with 1:56 remaining.

Cat Caples (Reistertownm Md. / St. Paul's School for Girls) sent a left-handed feed from behind the crease to a left-cutting McKnight into space between three defenders. McKnight ended up on the Sea Gulls' doorstep and buried her shot into the back of the net. On the ensuing draw, Eugenie Rovegno (Duxbury, Mass. / Duxbury) redirected the loose ball to Schwab for the final DC. From there, the Generals ran through the possession clock and defended the ball for the remaining 15 seconds to finish out the game.
