LEXINGTON, Va. -- The College Sport Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced its 2022 Division III Academic All-District Baseball teams on Thursday and Washington and Lee senior
Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) and junior
Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Catholic) were selected to the 12-member District 5 First Team.
Â
An economics and mathematics double-major, Wickman finished his senior campaign with the second-highest batting average on the team, a career-high mark of .358 on 48 hits in 134 at-bats. In 33 games, Wickman led the team in hits, doubles (12) and runs (33) this season, and he was third in extra-base hits (16). Defensively, Wickman posted a .992 fielding percentage with just two errors as the primary first baseman for the Generals this season.
Â
Salvino also had one of the strongest bats in the lineup, as he posted a .348 batting average on 40 hits in 115 at-bats in 28 games. An integrated engineering major, Salvino led the Generals in home runs (5), RBI (30) and slugging percentage (.609) this season, and he was tied with Wickman for the team-lead in total bases (70). Serving as the team's primary center fielder, Salvino posted a .986 fielding percentage with one assist in 72 chances.
Â
This marks the third time in the last four years that W&L has claimed at least one CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, and it is the first time since 2007 with multiple selections. Wickman and Salvino will now move onto the national ballot where they have a chance at garnering Academic All-America honors.
Â
The criteria for the CoSIDA All-District program states that a player must be of sophomore academic standing, be a starter or important reserve and claim a GPA of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale. Washington and Lee is a member of District 5, which includes players from small colleges in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
