Baseball Game at EMU Suspended in the 8th, Generals Lead 10-5

Game will Resume on April 7 in Lexington

HARRISONBURG, Va.  - The Washington and Lee University baseball team's game at Eastern Mennonite University was suspended due to darkness on Wednesday night with the Generals leading 10-5 in the top of the eighth inning. The final two innings will be played on April 7th at Cap'n Dick Smith Field prior to their 5 p.m. match up in Lexington.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Eastern Mennonite (8-10) scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first as Aidan Miller singled through the left side before moving into scoring position on a failed pick off attempt. A few pitches later, Daniel McGinnis drove him in with a single to right field to put the Royals up 1-0.
  • After a scoreless second inning, the Generals (11-6-1) took their first lead of the day after plating three runs on a pair of hits. Jonathan French led off the inning with a five-pitch walk before Nathan DeWitte reached on a fielder's choice. Alex Caywood wore a pitch in the next at-bat to load the bases before Andrew Thornton split the right-center gap for a double, driving in a pair of runs. Nick Caywood drew a four-pitch walk to put a pair of runners on before A. Caywood crossed the plate on a Camdyn Teague fielder's choice to put W&L up 3-1.
  • The Royals had a pair of runners on following back-to-back walks with one out before both moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. McGinnis scored in the next at-bat on a Generals' error to cut the lead to one.
  • Ian Weber led off the top of the fourth with a single to right field before moving to third on two wild pitches. DeWitte drove him in on a single down the right-field line to expand the lead back to two.
  • In the top of the seventh, Jackson Rogish singled to start the inning before scoring on a Weber double to right field to give the Blue and White a 5-2 lead. Following a stolen base and a French hit by pitch, the Generals had runners on the corners. DeWitte drove in his second run of the game as he laid down a bunt single.
  • After A. Caywood reached base on a hit by pitch, both runners moved into scoring position on stolen bases before a Thornton sacrifice fly drove in DeWitte to make it a 7-2 ballgame. N. Caywood put runners on the corners after reaching on an error before Lagges cleared the bases with a triple to right-center. Lagges made it a 10-2 game after scoring on a wild pitch.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, the Royals had the bases loaded following three straight walks. EMU plated three runs on three consecutive wild pitches to make it 10-5. Bob Burr came into the game in relief and struck out a batter while forcing a ground out to get out of the jam.
  • The Royals threw one pitch in the bottom of the eighth before the umpires suspended the game due to darkness.

  • Aidan Miller is leading the Royals with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate while Daniel McGinnis has the other hit for EMU.
  • Ty Woods will be on the mound for the Royals to start the resumption of the game in the eighth inning.
UP NEXT
  • The Generals are back at Cap'n Dick Smith Field on Saturday as they host Guilford College for an ODAC doubleheader. Game one is slated for Noon with game two to follow at roughly 3 p.m.
