WINCHESTER, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team fell to sixth-ranked Shenandoah University, 6-2, in a Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) midweek game to split the season series on Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a pair of scoreless innings, the Hornets (24-4, 8-4 ODAC) loaded the bases in the bottom of the third following a throwing error, a single from Jamie Padilla and a walk from Kyle Garrett. J.P. Williams provided the first runs of the game as he split the right center gap, clearing the bases to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead. Dillon Mauzy singled to left field before stealing second to put a pair in scoring position. Williams made it a four run game as he scored on a passed ball.
- The Generals (13-8-1, 7-5-1 ODAC) cut the Shenandoah lead to two in the top of the sixth as Nathan DeWitte beat out an infield single before Alex Caywood poked a single into right field to put a pair on. Following a double play, Ian Weber stepped up to the plate and took the first pitch over the right center field fence, his first collegiate home run, to make it 4-2.
- Shenandoah tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh as Dominic D'Ottavio drew a four pitch walk before moving over to third on two-straight ground outs. The Hornets took a 5-2 lead following a wild pitch before Carl Keenan reached first on a walk. After stealing second, Keenan moved over 180 feet on back-to-back wild pitches to give the Hornets a 6-2 win.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Blue and White fell to 13-8-1 on the season and 7-5-1 in conference play. This marked the third-straight season where the two teams have split the season series.
- Camdyn Teague and Alex Caywood paced the Generals' offense with two hits with Teague hitting a double. Ian Weber provided W&L's two runs as he blasted a two-run home run, the first of his young career.
- Eric Jacobsen (3-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits in 4.2 innings on the mound.
SHENANDOAH GAME NOTES
- The Hornets improved to 24-4 on the season with a 8-4 mark in conference play.
- Dillon Mauzy led the Shenandoah offense with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate while J.P. Williams drove in three of their six runs on a bases-clearing double in the third inning.
- Anthony Arrichiello (1-1) picked up his first win of the season after allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts in his sxi innings of work.
