LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team split with Guilford College in a Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader on Saturday while senior
Nick Lagges registered his 100th career hit.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1 (L, 4-5):
- Guilford (10-13) struck first in game one, tallying a pair of runs on two hits to take an early lead. Chris Shoemaker drew a six-pitch walk before moving into scoring position on a wild pitch. Skyler Dark drove him in as he doubled down the right-field line before scoring on a single from Rylan Smith.
- W&L (12-7-1) responded in the next half inning with back-to-back doubles from Nathan DeWitte and Alex Caywood to cut the lead to one. A. Caywood moved over to third on a passed ball before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Andrew Thornton to tie the game at two.
- In the top of the third, the Quakers tacked on another run as Ryne Rodrigues drew a leadoff walk before stealing second. Rodrigues scored two batters later as Dominic Pegues singled to left field to regain the lead.
- Just like the first inning, the Generals matched Guilford with a run in the bottom half of the inning. A. Caywood drew a four-pitch walk to kick off the inning before Thornton was hit by a pitch to put a pair on. Both runners moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt from Nick Caywood. Lagges drove in A. Caywood as he beat out an infield single, deadlocking the game at three.
- The Blue and White took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the fourth as Landen Rucker singled to start the inning before moving over on a sacrifice bunt from Jonathan French. DeWitte roped a single up the middle, driving in Rucker from second to take a 4-3 lead.
- After two scoreless innings, the Quakers tied the game at four in the top of the seventh. Skyler Dark singled to left-center and stole second to put himself in scoring position before Rylan Smith singled up the middle, driving in Dark.
- Guilford regained the lead in the top of the ninth as Rodrigues and Dark both reached on errors. Pegues drove in the winning run with a single to left field, giving the Quakers a 5-4 win in game one.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2 (W, 12-5):
- The Quakers plated the first run of the game in the first inning as Trae Pitts reached third on an error. He scored in the next at-bat as Rodrigues grounded out to take a 1-0 lead.
- W&L leveled the scoring in the bottom of the second as Lagges singled to right field before moving into scoring position on a failed pick off attempt. Camdyn Teague drove him in in the next at-bat with a deep single to left-center to tie the game at one.
- Guilford regained the lead in the next frame as Rylan Smith drove in Pitts on a sacrifice fly to give the Quakers a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the third, Thornton and N. Caywood recorded back-to-back two-out singles before Lagges drove in Thornton on a double down the left-field line to tie the game once again.
- Teague and Rogish led off the bottom of the fourth with a pair of singles before both moved into scoring position on an Ian Weber sacrifice bunt. Jonathan French drove in both runners with a single down the left-field line to give W&L a 4-2 lead.
- In the top of the fifth, the Quakers responded with a run of their own as Rylan Smith drove in Rodrigues, who reached on a six-pitch walk, with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to one.
- Thornton led off the bottom of the fifth with a single through the left side before N. Caywood blasted a two-run home run over the right-field fence to put the Generals in front 6-3.
- The Blue and White tacked on six runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth to take a 12-3 lead. French reached on an error to start the inning before a single from DeWitte put runners on the corners. The bases were loaded after A. Caywood was hit by a pitch, which set up a sacrifice fly from Thornton to make it a 7-3 game. N. Caywood drove in a pair of runs in the next at-bat as he roped a double into the right-center gap to give W&L a six-run lead. Teague got on base via a fielder's choice before Rogish beat out an infield single to drive in N. Caywood. Ian Weber drove in two more runs as he doubled down the left-field line to give W&L a 12-3 lead.
- Both teams were scoreless until the top of the ninth when the Quakers plated two runs on one hit and an error. Sam Melton drew a lead off walk before a Dawson Kirkland single and a throwing error by the Generals' pitcher drove in Melton to make it 12-4. Kirkland found himself 90 feet from the plate on a wild pitch before a fielder's choice drove him in to make it 12-5. Bob Burr forced a ground out in the next at-bat to secure the 12-5 win and a series split.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Henry Steene (2-1) was credited with the win in game two as he pitched 7.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with two strikeouts. Brody Pasieka (1-1) was tagged with the loss in game one after allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits in his four innings of work.
- Nick Caywood and Nathan DeWitte led the offense with four hits while N. Cayoowd drove in a team-high four RBI with a pair of doubles and a home run. Jonathan French, Nick Lagges, Andrew Thornton and Ian Weber each had two RBI.

- Nick Lagges registered his 100th career hit in his 100th career game this afternoon, tallying a combined three hits in both games.
