LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University baseball team used a six run fifth inning to ease by Wilson College, 15-5, in seven innings on Monday evening at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Generals (13-7-1) took an early lead in the bottom of the first as Alex Caywood and Andrew Thornton each hit one-out singles. Caywood scored two batters later as Jackson Rogish singled to left field before Ian Weber cleared the bases with a single into the left-center field gap to give W&L a 3-0 lead.
- The Phoenix (3-13-1) cut into the Generals' lead in the top of the second as Charles Musser drew a four-pitch walk before Tyler O'Brien singled to put a pair on. Wilson had the bases loaded following an error before Sandro Granados blooped a single into right to drive in Musser.
- W&L tacked on two more in the bottom of the third as Alex Caywood drew a five-pitch walk to lead off the inning before stealing second. Thornton drove him in with a triple to right field before scoring on a Lagges ground out to put the Blue and White up 5-1.
- Wilson put a pair of runners on with a single and an error to start the fifth inning. Garrett Drish moved Cody Valentine and Sam Martin into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Derek Chavera singled to right to drive in Valentine before Zachary Tyler hit a bloop single into right to plate another. Musser and O'Brien drew back-to-back five-pitch walks to make it 5-4.
- The Generals' offense came alive in the bottom half of the inning as they plated six runs on four hits to take a seven-run lead. Teague led off the inning with a triple before scoring on a Caywood triple to center field. Thornton drew a four-pitch walk before stealing second to put runners in scoring position. Lagges then hit the third triple of the inning, driving in a pair of runs to give W&L an 8-4 lead. Rogish and Ian Weber both drew walks following a pitching change before Landen Rucker reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Lagges, while Rogish crossed the plate on a throwing error by the Wilson shortstop.
- William Melton put a pair of runners on after drawing the fourth walk of the inning before Teague drove in Rucker with a single into right field to put W&L up 11-4.
- The Phoenix added a run in the top of the sixth as Drish singled to right field with two outs before swiping second base. Chavera drove him in with a single to left field to make it an 11-5 ballgame.
- In the bottom of the seventh, Jonathan French wore a pitch to lead off the inning before Teague beat out an infield single to put two on. The Generals executed a double steal to put a pair in scoring position before Caywood walked to load the bases. Thornton drew a five-pitch walk to drive in a run before a fielding error drove in Teague to make it 13-5. Nathan DeWitte drew a four-pitch walk while Rucker was hit by a pitch to make it 15-5, ending the game in seven innings.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals moved to 13-7-1 on the season, winning five of their last six games. W&L scored 15 runs, the fourth-most this season, on 10 hits and 11 walks while registering four triples.
- Camdyn Teague led the offense with a 3-for-5 effort at the dish with a triple and an RBI while stealing one base. Nick Lagges drove in a game-high three runs while Andrew Thornton, Ian Weber and Landen Rucker each had two RBI in the win.
- Hudson Thomas picked up his first career win on the mound after allowing one earned run on four hits in four innings. He walked a pair and struck out one.
WILSON GAME NOTES
- The Phoenix fall to 3-13-1 on the season, dropping their sixth-straight game.
- Garrett Drish, Derek Chavera and Zachary Tyler led the Phoenix offense with two hits each while Chavera drove in a team-high two runs.
- Jason Boak (0-1) was credited with the loss after allowing five earned runs on five hits in his three innings of work..
