LEXINGTON, Va. — The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association announced its 2022 Hall of Fame Class on Wednesday, and the Washington and Lee Michael F. Walsh Director of Athletics
Jan Hathorn will be inducted as one of the three honorees.
"Some of the most influential people in my professional career, as well as my personal life, are the women who have made up, and continue to make up, this exceptional organization, which only serves to make this award even more significant in every way," said Hathorn. "Thank you to the Association and the Hall of Fame committee for considering and selecting me. I'm incredibly humbled to receive this recognition."
Hathorn directed W&L's women's lacrosse program from its inception in 1988 through the 2007 season. Her skill at developing programs was demonstrated by W&L's appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament in 1993, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Hathorn claimed a 277-112 (.712) career record over 24 seasons, with 222 of those victories occurring while leading the Generals. Her 277 victories are 12th all-time in Division III and her .712 career winning percentage is the 16th-best in the history of Division III.
In W&L's first varsity season, Hathorn led the Generals to the semifinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament. From there, W&L posted 17 winning campaigns over the next 18 years and won ODAC titles in 1992, 1993, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Hathorn was named ODAC Lacrosse Coach of the Year in 1992, 1993, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007, earned two regional coach of the year accolades and has served on the NCAA Lacrosse Committee.
Hathorn is now in her 15th year as the Director of Athletics since her appointment in 2007. Hathorn was the 2019 recipient of the NCAA Division III Administrator of the Year Award from the Women Leaders in College Sports.
Under Hathorn's direction, the Generals have won better than 60 percent of their athletic contests and 115 conference championships. Additionally, W&L has been awarded the Dan Wooldridge Champions Cup as the top overall athletic program in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference following all 14 of her years as athletic director.
During Hathorn's time as Director of Athletics, W&L has enjoyed some of the best seasons in the history of the school. The 2020-21 school year saw W&L navigate the pandemic and thrive to the tune of producing a state-wide best 75.8 winning percentage (115-36-2) and five conference championships.
While athletic success has become the norm, academic achievement has always been at the forefront for W&L athletics under Hathorn's leadership. A record 419 students earned scholar-athlete status during the 2020-21 school year and a total of 16 students have been awarded the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship during Hathorn's tenure. Scores more have been named to CoSIDA Academic All-America teams.
Hathorn plays an active role within the NCAA and is a current member of the Division III Membership Committee. She recently served on the Division III Constitutional Advisory Committee and served on the NCAA Management Council from 2011-15. During this time, she was a part of the Honors Committee, the Postgraduate Scholarship Committee and the Division III Subcommittee for Legislative Relief. She also served as a panelist for the 2019 NACDA/NADIIIAA summer forum and the 2016 NCAA Inclusion Forum in Indianapolis.
Before coming to W&L, Hathorn spent five successful years as the Head Women's Lacrosse Coach at Denison University, where she coached the team to five conference titles. She was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Coach of the Year in 1987.
Hathorn earned a B.A. in physical education from the State University of New York at Cortland in 1982 and an M.A. in physical education from Ohio State University in 1985. She played lacrosse and basketball at Cortland.
The induction ceremony will take place on November 17, 2022 as part of the 2022 IWLCA Hall of Fame and Honors Banquet during the IWLCA Convention at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas. Along with Hathorn, current Princeton University head coach, Chris Sailer, and former coach Dorothy "Dotty" Hall of St. Lawrence will be enshrined.
