2026 Women's Lacrosse NCAA Second Round Preview

LEXINGTON, Va. — The No. 11 Washington and Lee University women's lacrosse team opens NCAA Tournament play on Sunday afternoon when it hosts No. 22 Christopher Newport in the Second Round of the 2026 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship at Alston Parker Watt Field. Opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Fans are encouraged to secure tickets in advance through HomeTown Ticketing. NCAA Tournament ticket prices are $11 for general admission (18 and older), and $6 for students and children (ages 3-17) and seniors (65+). Special thanks to Alumni Affairs and Career Services for providing commemorative NCAA Tournament T-shirts and sponsoring the W&L community ticket sales for Sunday's matchup.

First Round Recap

Christopher Newport (14-6) advanced to the second round following a commanding 17-6 victory over Meredith on Saturday afternoon in Lexington. The Captains used a balanced offensive attack and a dominant third quarter to pull away, outscoring Meredith 5-1 in the frame and finishing with 17 goals from seven different scorers.

Brookelyn Morrison led the way for CNU with four goals and two assists while also collecting eight draw controls. Faith O'Connor added three goals and two assists, while Elena Sorkin and Annabella Burke each scored three times. Kate Webb chipped in a goal and two assists, and goalkeeper Hadley Chadwick posted seven saves in the win.

About the Generals

Washington and Lee (15-4) enters the postseason after claiming its 16th consecutive ODAC Championship and 26th overall conference title with an 8-6 victory over Randolph-Macon last weekend. The Generals have won eight straight contests entering Sunday's matchup and have allowed fewer than seven goals in five of those games.

Washington and Lee averages 14.0 goals per game while allowing just 7.1 goals per contest. The Generals hold advantages in turnover margin, draw controls and clearing percentage, converting clears at an .881 clip while forcing 306 opponent turnovers this season. W&L also owns a .487 shooting percentage and has outscored opponents 266-134 on the year.

Hannah Van Son leads the Generals offensively after totaling three goals and an assist in the ODAC Championship game, while Lara Baki and Grace Kim combined for four goals in the conference title victory. Goalkeeper Iman Haddad has anchored the W&L defense throughout the season and enters the NCAA Tournament with a .538 save percentage in postseason play.

Who to Watch

  • Kelly Polacek The engine of the Generals' offense. Polacek ranks among regional leaders with 33 assists, 30 goals and 63 total points, making her the primary facilitator against a Christopher Newport defense that ranks among the national leaders in caused turnovers.
  • Lara Baki & Hannah Van Son Baki and Van Son led the attack throughout the regular season, combining for 91 goals and 108 points.
  • Iman Haddad One of the top goalkeepers in the division, Haddad was named ODAC Defensive Player of the Year last week. Haddad posted a 15-4 record with a 7.88 goals-against average and 126 saves, serving as the backbone of a unit that limited opponents to 134 goals across 19 games.
  • Other Notable Names: True two-way middies Emma Marsh and Betty Boatwright have combined for 81 draw controls this season. Sophomore Dagny Tombaugh paces the defense with 45 ground balls and 25 caused turnovers.

About the Captains

Christopher Newport enters Sunday averaging 15.0 goals per game and features one of the top statistical profiles in Division III. Morrison totaled six points and eight draw controls in Saturday's first-round victory, while O'Connor, Sorkin and Burke combined for nine goals. Chadwick remains one of the most experienced goalkeepers in Division III and helped limit Meredith to six goals on Saturday.

CNU earned an at-large selection into the NCAA field, marking the program's 11th all-time appearance and third in the last four seasons. The Captains enter the weekend battle-tested, having faced nine NCAA Tournament teams this season and advancing to at least the second round in each of the last two tournaments.

Who To Watch

  • Brookelyn Morrison — One of the top all-around midfielders in Division III, Morrison leads CNU with 110 draw controls and has added 49 caused turnovers this season. She posted four goals, two assists and eight draw controls in Saturday's NCAA first-round win over Meredith.
  • Faith O'Connor, Elena Sorkin & Annabella Burke — Part of a balanced Christopher Newport attack averaging 15.0 goals per game, the trio combined for nine goals in Saturday's 17-6 victory over Meredith and helped the Captains score 285 goals this season.
  • Kate Webb — One of CNU's primary offensive facilitators with a team-best 35 assists, Webb is a major part of the Captains' offense that totaled 139 assists and a .467 shooting percentage this season. She finished with a goal and two assists against Meredith.
  • Hadley Chadwick — A veteran presence in goal, Chadwick anchors a defense allowing just 10.16 goals per game while helping lead a unit that has totaled 249 caused turnovers this season. She recorded seven saves in Saturday's NCAA Tournament opener.

The Last Matchup

On March 4, W&L earned a 15-9 non-conference victory over Christopher Newport at Watt Field. The Generals built an early cushion, weathered a third-quarter push by the Captains, and pulled away late behind a dominant night from Hannah Van Son and a four-goal performance from Kelly Polacek.

Washington and Lee came out sharp, scoring four times in the opening 4:44 to take a 4-0 lead. Christopher Newport responded with two late first-quarter goals, but the Generals carried a 4-2 advantage into the second.

W&L added four more goals in the second quarter, including back-to-back man-up tallies from Emma Marsh and Lara Baki, to stretch the lead to 8-3 at halftime.

The Captains made their strongest push in the third, scoring five goals in the period to cut into the margin. Washington and Lee answered with three goals of its own, including two quick strikes from Polacek, and took an 11-8 lead into the fourth.

The Generals closed the game with a strong final quarter, scoring four times to secure the 15-9 win. Van Son scored three times in the fourth, including two player-up goals, as W&L maintained control down the stretch.
