Brueggeman Named to D3hoops.com All-South Region Squad

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — On Tuesday morning it was announced that Washington and Lee junior guard William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) has been named to the D3hoops.com All-South Region team as a third team selection.

Brueggeman is just the fourth player in program history to be named to the D3hoops.com all-region teams, but he is the third General in the last three years to garner the accolade.  Roy McMillan '19 was named to the third team last season and Clayton Murtha '18 received third team honors in 2018.

Brueggeman completed his junior season as the second-leading scorer in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with an average of 18.2 points per game.  He set a new program record for three-pointers made in a season (70-184, .380), tying with senior teammate Kevin Dennin (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) for that honor.  The prior mark of 63 three-pointers was held by Ian McClure '05 and Bryan Watkins '93.

The Houston native shot 45.1 percent (146-324) from the field and 81.4 percent (92-113) from the foul line, scoring in double figures in 20 of the team's 26 games.  Brueggeman posted 20 or more points 13 times, including tallying a career-best 30 points and 10 rebounds in a 96-85 win over Ferrum on February 22.

In addition to his scoring numbers, Brueggeman also grabbed a career-best average of 6.8 rebounds per game, while contributing 1.4 assists and 1.1 steals per contest.

Brueggeman will enter his final season just 37 points shy (963) of becoming the 28th player in program history to score 1,000 career points.  He also ranks fifth all-time in career three-pointers made (154) and can break the program record with 54 more triples.

Washington and Lee completed the 2020 season with a 20-6 overall record, the most wins for the program since the 1988-89 campaign.  The Generals posted a 12-4 league mark and earned the No. 3 seed for the ODAC Tournament, where they were defeated by sixth-seeded Lynchburg, 84-83, in the quarterfinals.
