LEXINGTON, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference announced the seedings for the upcoming Men's Basketball Championship and Washington and Lee earned the No. 6 seed.
The Generals finished the regular season with an overall record of 17-8, which included a 9-7 mark in the ODAC. Randolph-Macon topped the eight-team tournament field, with Virginia Wesleyan slotted No. 2, Roanoke at No. 3 and Hampden-Sydney rounding out the Top-4 teams and those who will host quarterfinal games. Lynchburg claimed the No. 5 seed, with Averett and Guilford completing this year's tournament participants.
As the No. 6 seed, W&L will travel to Roanoke College for a quarterfinal game on Tuesday, which will mark the teams' third meeting this season. The Generals won both regular season meetings against the Maroons, 58-57 in Salem and 64-56 in Lexington. It will also be the fourth consecutive ODAC Tournament in which W&L and Roanoke will meet in the quarterfinal round.
The Generals enter conference tournament play averaging 72.4 points per game while allowing 67.4 per contest. The Blue and White also hold positive margins over their opponents for the season in field goal shooting (0.421 to 0.402), rebounds per game (37.8 to 36.4), assists per game (12.5 to 10.0). The Generals also forced more turnovers than they committed in 15-of-25 games this season, going 11-4 in those games, while holding their opponents to under 40 percent field goal shooting in 19 games (14-5).
Sophomore
Connor Amorosi paces the Generals' scoring efforts this season with 16.9 points per game on 46.1 percent shooting from the field and 44.4 percent (32-72) from outside. Senior
Colin Ryan follows in scoring at 9.7 points per game on 45.5 percent shooting, with a team-high 124 assists and the second-most rebounds (134) on the team, as well.
First-year
Addison Newkirk is the Generals' leading rebounder at 7.2 per game, plus a team-best 31 steals, and he ranks third on the squad in scoring at 9.1 points per game. Seniors
A.J. Thomas and
John Loughlin round out W&L's Top 5 scorers at 8.5 and 8.0 per game, respectively. Loughlin is the team's top threat from three-point range as he leads in both percentage (.422) and made threes (54), while ranking third and fifth, respectively, in the ODAC.
If the Generals advance to the semifinals in the ODAC Tournament, they will take on the winner of the quarterfinal between No. 2 Virginia Wesleyan and No. 7 Averett on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center. The ODAC Men's Basketball Championship game will be played on Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
