Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball stifled at HSC to close regular season

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Sophomore Connor Amorosi scored 13 of his game-high 21 points in the first half, but the Washington and Lee men's basketball team was limited throughout the game from the floor in a 69-57 loss against Hampden-Sydney on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Tigers (16-9, 10-6 ODAC) had the upper hand early, opening with a 17-4 lead through five minutes of play, as they made six of their first 11 shots.
  • The Generals (17-8, 9-7 ODAC) gradually outscored HSC, 22-16, for the remainder of the half, as both offenses shot under 40 percent over the next 14:50. Amorosi had 11 of his 13 first-half points in that time, including a half-ending three to keep the Generals within seven points.
  • Early in the second, Amorosi, sophomore Bryce Breeden and senior Colin Ryan each scored two points to help get W&L back within four points at 36-32 by the 17:23 mark. However, the Tigers went on to outscore the Blue and White 15-7 over the next 8:29 to cushion their lead back to 12.
  • Back-and-forth ensued over the final 7:45 of regulation, with the Tigers seemingly having an answer for each W&L rally. W&L scored six straight points from 7:45 to 5:14, before both teams traded two threes each from 5:04 to 3:25.
  • After six more points got the Tigers back up, 63-51, seniors A.J. Thomas and John Loughlin sank back-to-back threes just 22 seconds apart to make it a six-point game once more. Over the final 44 seconds, HSC went 6-of-6 at the free throw line while getting three defensive stops to close out the game.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Amorosi's game-high 21 points came on 7-of-15 shooting and 3-of-6 from three-point range. He also added five rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block to his line.
  • Thomas finished with 13 points, as he made a trio of threes and four foul shots. First-year Addison Newkirk led the Generals with nine rebounds, while Ryan contributed eight points and five assists.
  • Colin Radcliffe led the Tigers' efforts with 20 points, followed by a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double from Travis Stickney. Stickney also paced all players with six assists.
  • Peter Moye was the game's top rebounder with 11 boards in addition to nine points.
ODAC TOURNAMENT UPDATE:
  • Saturday's result clinched the No. 4 seed and a home quarterfinal game for the Tigers, while the Generals will slot in as the No. 6 seed for next Tuesday's quarterfinal action. They finished in a tie for fifth with Lynchburg, but the Hornets own the head-to-head tiebreaker.
TEAM STATS:
  • The Tigers outshot the Generals from the floor, 36.8 percent (21-57) to 30.2 percent (19-63). Both teams made nine threes, with the Tigers needing 26 attempts (.346) to the Generals' 32 (.281).
  • Hampden-Sydney also claimed the rebounding battle, 51-37, which included a 15-12 margin on the offensive glass.
  • The Generals, who only committed seven turnovers, outscored HSC in points off turnovers (12-6). The hosts held scoring advantages, however, in second-chance points (10-4), bench points (41-17), points in the paint (22-16) and fastbreak points (15-8).
UP NEXT:
As the ODAC Tournament's No. 6 seed, the Generals will travel to third-seeded Roanoke on Tuesday for the conference quarterfinal round. It will mark the teams' third meeting this season, after the Generals won both in the regular season, 58-57 in Salem (Jan. 10) and 64-56 in Lexington (Feb. 4).
