Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team opened the game on a 16-4 run en route to posting an 82-38 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at the Batten Center.
The Generals (17-7, 14-3) forced the Marlins (5-19, 3-14) into five missed shots and two turnovers in the first five minutes and change, registering the early 12-points lead (16-4) with 4:44 left in the first period. Sophomore forward

Andy Smithey (Charlotte, N.C. / Saint Mary's School) each tallied four points during the opening run.
W&L carried a 13-point lead (25-12) into the second period, building a 20-point lead (32-12) with a 7-0 spurt to begin the second staza. Senior forward
Molly Mann (Matthews, N.C. / Weddington) opened with a three-pointer that was followed by a pair of layups from junior guard
Erin Hughes (Raleigh, N.C. / Ravenscroft School).
The Blue & White held a 41-20 advantage at the halftime break, but truly broke the game open in the third period, hitting 9-of-18 shots, including 3-of-9 from distance, to assume a 68-31 lead heading into the final period. Hughes scored a team-best seven points during the quarter, hitting a pair of field goals and drilling all three of her charity tosses. W&L cleared the bench in the fourth period and cruised to the win.
Sophomore guard
Megan Horn (Basking Ridge, N.J. / The Pingry School) led the way with 13 points and eight rebounds, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor. Hughes notched 11 points, while sophomore guard
Kate Groninger (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Upper St. Clair) and first-year forward
Kathryn Vandiver (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin School) added 10 points each. Vandiver finished 4-of-5 from the floor in registering a career-high point total. She also grabbed six rebounds.
The Generals' defense limited the Marlins to just 27.3 percent shooting (15-55) and forced 17 turnovers. First-year guard Lindsey Hicks led VWU with a game-high 15 points.
Washington and Lee will wrap up the regular season when it travels to Randolph for a 7:30 pm game on Wednesday.
