W&L Men's Basketball Upended by Randolph-Macon, 84-75

Box Score

ASHLAND, Va. — Randolph-Macon ended the game on an 18-10 run en route to an 84-75 victory over the Washington and Lee men's basketball team on Saturday at Crenshaw Gymnasium. The loss was the first in ODAC play for the Generals (10-5, 5-1 ODAC), while the Yellow Jackets (12-3, 6-0 ODAC) remained perfect in the conference.

The two teams went back and forth for most of the contest, but a 9-2 spurt by R-MC midway through the second half put the Blue and White in a 63-54 hole with 7:53 on the clock. On W&L's next possession, junior guard Alex Starr (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) splashed a three-pointer to bring the Generals to within six (63-57).

After a steal by first-year guard William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep), senior forward Nicholas George (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) converted a layup on the other end to close the gap to 63-59 at the seven-minute mark. After a couple of empty possessions, junior guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas/Samuel Clemens) drained a triple, trimming the deficit to one (63-62) with 5:55 left on the clock.

R-MC called a timeout and then made a three-pointer at the 5:15 mark to push its lead to 66-62. Junior forward Roy McMillan (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) answered with an old fashioned three-point play, but a layup by senior forward Daniel Noe gave the Yellow Jacket a three-point margin (68-65) with 4:22 to go in the game.

The bucket by Noe started an 11-0 run for R-MC that spanned three minutes of game action to extend the spread to 11 points, 77-65, at the 1:11 mark, effectively putting the game away. During the scoring drought for the Blue and White, the team shot 0-for-3 from the field and turned the ball over twice. The Generals went into foul mode in the final minute, but could not erase the margin, as the Yellow Jackets held on for the nine-point win.

The R-MC defense pressured W&L into 15 turnovers, while the Yellow Jackets only committed eight. R-MC also had 25 assists on 30 made baskets. The Generals shot 48.2 percent (27-of-56) from the field, but just 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from the foul line.

The Yellow Jackets finished 30-of-65 (46.2 percent) from the floor and 13-of-17 (76.5 percent) from the charity stripe. Each team made 11 three-pointers in the contest.

Kearns led the Blue and White with 20 points on 7-of-12 from the field. He also had six assists and four rebounds. McMillan totaled 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting, and first-year forward Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) notched 13 points off the bench in 16 minutes. Senior forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) had his 35-game streak of scoring in double figures snapped, as he had just five points.

R-MC had five players in double figures led by junior forward Montese Adams' 16 points on 7-of-11 from the floor. First-year guard Buzz Anthony registered a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists, and junior forward Darryl Williams had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they host Randolph at 7:00 pm.
