Box Score 2 EMORY, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team totaled 26 runs on 27 hits in a doubleheader sweep at Emory & Henry on Saturday.
The Generals scored two runs in the top of the ninth, and then junior center fielder Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) launched a two-run home run in the 10th en route to an 8-6 victory in game one. W&L endured a three-hour rain delay and a change of venue while taking game two, 18-7.
The Blue and White trailed 6-4 entering the ninth of game one. Ruedisili opened the frame with a double to right, and then moved to third on a wild pitch. First-year right fielder Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) brought Ruedisli home (6-5) on a single to right.
Following a fly out and a fielder's choice, senior catcher Cory Paton (Ashton, Md./St. Johns College) walked to put runners on first and second. Senior Anderson Baldy (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) pinch hit for the W&L and singled to right to score senior third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) from second base and tie the game, 6-6.
After a scoreless bottom of the ninth, Ruedisili launched a two-run home run to right center to put the Generals up, 8-6, in the top of the 10th. The Wasps (17-23, 7-13 ODAC) had runners on first and third with one out in the bottom of the inning, but sophomore Danny Devereux (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) recorded a strikeout and a groundout to escape the jam and seal the victory.
Devereux pitched the final 3.2 innings for W&L to improve to 8-1 on the season. He did not allow a run on four hits and one walk. He struck out three batters. The eight victories ties for the second-most in a single season in program history with six other players. First-year Alex Laws (2-1) suffered the loss for E&L. He threw 1.0 inning, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk.
The Generals had three home runs in the opener. Besides Ruedisili's game-winner, Monson and Paton each registered their first collegiate homers. Monson hit a solo shot in the top of the first and Paton led off the fourth with a ball over the right center wall.
W&L had a 6-0 lead in game two before the skies opened up, and delayed the game for over three hours. The Blue and White scored the six runs in the top of the first at Porterfield-DeVault Field in Emory, Va. Leading 2-0 with the bases loaded, Paton pushed the advantage to 5-0 on a double to left center. The final run of the inning came home on an RBI double by sophomore shortstop Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School).
After the extended delay and a switch to Falcon Park at Abingdon High School due to the need of lights, the W&L offense picked up right where it left off. Holding a 7-1 lead after two innings, the Blue and White scored four in the third. During the rally, Ruedisili drew a bases-loaded walk, and Monson followed with a sacrifice fly (9-1). Feeley put the Generals up, 11-1, on a two-run double to right center.
E&H scored one in the third (11-2), but W&L put the game away with five runs in the fourth. During the rally, Baldy homered, and then the Generals drew four bases-loaded walks. The Wasps outscored the Blue and White, 5-2, over the last 5.0 innings to reach the final margin, 18-3.
Sophomore Kevin McHugh (Forest Hill, Md./McDonogh School) was the first pitcher on the mound for W&L after the delay and earned the victory. He pitched 3.0 innings, surrendering two runs on five hits to improve to 2-0. Sophomore Gavin Felty (4-3) started for E&H and took the loss. He allowed six runs on four hits and three walks in 0.2 innings.
On the day, Ruedisili went 5-for-10 with five RBI, four runs, two doubles and a home run. Paton was 4-for-9 with seven RBI (including five in game two), two runs and one double.
The 18 runs by the Generals in game two were the most by the team since an 18-2 victory against Averett on April 3, 2013. The 16 conference wins by the Blue and White set a new program record. The 2003 team went 15-3 in the league and held the previous mark.
W&L finishes as the co-regular season champions in the ODAC with Shenandoah. This marks the first time in program history the team has finished the regular season with a share of the best record. The Hornets hold the tiebreaker over the Blue and White and will be the top seed in the conference tournament.
The Generals will be the two seed in the ODAC Tournament and face fifth-seeded Hampden-Sydney on Thursday at 2:30 pm at City Stadium in Lynchburg.
