Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. – Colin Morse tossed 7.0 innings of five-hit ball to lead top-ranked Shenandoah to a 9-5 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Bridgeforth Field.
Morse allowed just two runs while striking out eight batters (three walks) in improving to 8-0 on the season.
The Generals (23-12, 14-4) tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run to left center by senior third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula). However, the Hornets took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame on a fielder's choice by senior rightfielder Abel Arocho and on a sacrifice fly to left field by senior catcher Dan Cameron for a 4-2 advantage.
Shenandoah (32-4, 15-3) assumed a 5-2 lead in the sixth inning on a solo home run to left center by junior third baseman Donnie Forgacs, and then broke the game open with a pair of RBI singles and a two-run double by junior centerfielder Nick Goode for a 9-2 lead. W&L responded with three runs in the top of the ninth to make it a 9-5 game, but could get no closer as the Hornets wrestled first-place in the ODAC away from the Generals.
Senior right hander Tom Concklin (Hinsdale, Ill. / Hinsdale Central) started and took the loss to fall to 6-3 on the season. He surrendered four runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Weston led W&L at the dish, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBI. Senior leftfielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa. / Lower Merion) and sophomore shortstop Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla. / Episcopal School) both collected two hits in five at-bats. Wasson scored one run and Feeley had one RBI.
Sophomore second baseman Tristen Baker went 3-for-4 with a double and Forgacs was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to lead the Hornets. Sophomore shortstop Robert Marcelle finished 2-for-2 with three walks and two runs scored as well.
Washington and Lee will wrap up the regular season on Saturday when it travels to Emory & Henry for a double-header beginning at 12:00 pm.
