Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The second-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team scored the first 13 goals of the game en route to claiming a 16-4 victory over Bridgewater in ODAC action on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
Senior attacker Hayley Soutter (McLean, Va. / Langley) came out aggressive for the Generals (13-1, 7-0), scoring four of the team's first five goals. She tallied the first just 45 seconds into the contest off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Cordelia Peters (Larkspur, Calif. / Hotchkiss School). Peters scored an unassisted goal 1:10 later to give W&L a 2-0 lead. Soutter then notched three straight to give the Blue and White a 5-0 lead with 18:13 remaining.
W&L continued to dominate the offensive end and scored seven more goals in the remaining 17:29 of the half to take a 12-0 lead into the break. Senior attacker Sara Holland (Houston, Texas / M.B. Lamar) and junior midfielder Mimi MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Kent Place School) each had two goals during the spurt, while senior midfielder Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md. / Roland Park Country School) tallied a goal and an assist.
Junior attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville) and senior attacker Lauren Procaccino (Manhasset, N.Y.) scored the final goals of the half.
Castelo pushed the Generals lead to 13-0 at the 28:57 mark of the second half. First-year attacker Dwyer Neal got the Eagles (9-6, 4-4) on the board off of a free position shot with 27:16 remaining. The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the game to reach the final margin, 16-4.
For the contest, W&L held a 26-6 advantage in shots and a 19-3 edge in draw controls. Soutter led the Generals with four goals and an assist. Waxter, Castelo and Holland each tallied two goals and an assist, while MacCowatt totaled two goals.
Peters registered a game-high four assists and sophomore midfielder Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's) won eight draw controls. First-year keeper Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y. / Deerfield Academy) played the first half in goal and did not face a shot. Juniors Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton), Harleigh Bean (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Episcopal) and sophomore Ellie Aburn (Towson, Md. / Notre Dame Preparatory) split time in the second half and made a combined five saves.
Neal, sophomore midfielders Sarah Yashinskie, and Anna O'Hara and first-year attacker Jacqueline DiFulvio each had a goal for Bridgewater. Senior Rachel Gruber played the entire goal in game for the Eagles and made seven saves.
The Generals close out the regular season on Saturday when they hosts Randolph at 2:00 pm.
