Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – The second-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team used a 10-goal run to pull away for a 15-4 victory over Guilford in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon at the Armfield Athletic Center.
W&L (12-1, 6-0) led just 5-3 with 11:46 remaining in the opening half, but ended the first stanza with six straight goals and then followed with the first four scores of the second half in cruising to its eighth straight win.
Senior attacker Hayley Soutter (McLean, Va. / Langley) got the run started with a goal at the 10:00 mark off an assist from first-year attacker Collette Murray (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset). Sophomore midfielder Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's) followed with an unassisted goal at 4:58 and senior attacker Sara Holland (Houston, Texas / M.B. Lamar) scored off an assist from junior attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville) just 1:04 later. Castelo scored a goal of her own at 2:33 and junior attacker Mimi MacCowatt (New Vernon, N.J. / Kent Place) added an up goal with 23 seconds left in the half for a 10-3 advantage. The Blue & White collected one more score before the break, as Holland fed senior midfielder Olivia Sisson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley) for a score just 12 seconds later for an 11-3 lead at the half.
Tucker and Castelo each scored an unassisted goal in the first 3:54 of the second half for a 13-3 lead, and MacCowatt scored two more herself for a 15-3 advantage with 5:13 remaining. Guilford capped the scoring with a tally by senior defender Summer Fowler with 17 seconds left, as W&L defeated the Quakers (6-9, 3-4) for the 30th time in 32 chances.
W&L held advantages of 39-8 in shots, 22-15 in ground balls and 16-4 in draw controls.
Castelo finished with three goals and one assist, while MacCowatt and Tucker scored three goals apiece. Tucker added five draw controls, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sisson and Soutter each scored twice and Holland finished with one goal and three helpers. Murray chipped in three assists. First-year Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y. / Deerfield Academy) played the first 44:08 in goal and had one save with three goals allowed to earn the win. Junior Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) played the final 15:52 and made one stop.
Guilford was led by sophomore attacker Amanda Dionne, who totaled two goals. Fowler chipped in one goal and one assist, while senior Sammi Milbourn notched 12 saves in 60 minutes of action between the pipes.
Washington and Lee plays again on Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Bridgewater for a 5:00 pm contest.
