Weston's Walk-Off Single Gives Generals a Doubleheader Split against Roanoke

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th of game one, as the Washington and Lee baseball team earned a doubleheader split against Roanoke on Friday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Generals (23-11, 14-3 ODAC) scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game one, which led to Weston's heroics in the 11th. The Maroons (23-13, 7-9 ODAC) held the Blue and White to just six hits to claim the second contest, 5-2.

After Roanoke tallied three runs in the top of the eighth in the opener of the twin bill, W&L entered the bottom of the frame down, 4-2. First-year right fielder Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) led off the inning with a double to left center. Senior catcher Cory Paton (Ashton, Md./St. Johns College) followed with a single to center to bring home Monson and trim the deficit to 4-3.

The Generals eventually loaded the bases with two outs later in the inning, and senior left fielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) was hit by a pitch to force in a run and tie the game (4-4). Senior pitcher Craig Kiley escaped the jam with no further damage for Roanoke by inducing an inning-ending groundout.

The game remained knotted at 4-4 until the bottom of the 11th. Junior center fielder Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) opened the inning with a double off the right field wall. Wasson was intentionally walked, and sophomore shortstop Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School) loaded the bases with a bunt single down the first base line.

Weston gave the Generals the walk-off victory with a single up the middle to bring Ruedisili across the plate, 5-4. Sophomore Danny Devereux (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) pitched the final 3.2 innings for W&L to earn the victory and improve to 7-1. He allowed one unearned run on three hits with two strikeouts.

Kiley suffered the loss for the Maroons to fall to 1-1. He gave up three runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings.

The Generals trailed 2-0 through three innings of game two, but tied the game, 2-2, in the fourth. Feeley had an RBI double during the rally, and then came around to score later in the frame on an attempted steal by Monson. It proved to be the only two runs the Blue and White would score the entire game.

After Roanoke first-year starter Forrest Wagner was forced from the game due to injury, sophomore Steven Loney threw the final 5.2 innings. He did not give up a run on three hits to earn the victory and improve to 2-1.

The Maroons' offense scored one run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Will Black, a run in the eighth on an RBI single by junior second baseman Eli Sumpter and a run in the ninth on a wild pitch to win the game, 5-2.

First-year Carson McKoon (Chattanooga, Tenn./McCallie School) took the loss for W&L. He surrendered three runs on six hits and four walks in 5.0 innings. He fell to 1-2 on the season.

With the win in game one, the Blue and White set a new record for wins in a single season at home. These were the final two scheduled home games for the Generals, so they finish the year with a record of 17-4 at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The previous wins record at home was 16 set by last year's squad. Game one of the doubleheader was delayed for 1:27 due to weather.

The Generals return to action on Tuesday, when they play at Shenandoah at 4:00 pm.
