No. 2 W&L Women's Lacrosse Tops Shenandoah, 15-6

WINCHESTER, Va. – The second-ranked W&L women's lacrosse team used an eight-goal run across the end of the first half and beginning on the second in posting a 15-6 victory over Shenandoah in ODAC action on Wednesday night at Sprint Field.

The two teams traded goals back-and-forth in the opening 11:23 of the contest, before W&L (11-1, 5-0) used the aforementioned run to turn a 3-3 contest into an 11-3 lead with 21:08 left in the second half.

Senior attacker Hayley Soutter (McLean, Va. / Langley) got the run started when she scored off an assist from senior midfielder Olivia Sisson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley) at the 16:50 mark. Sophomore midfielder Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's) followed with a goal off a feed from sophomore midfielder Cordelia Peters (Larkspur, Calif. / Hotchkiss) at 13:56, and junior attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville) added an unassisted tally at 10:23.  Soutter then assisted on back-to-back goals by senior midfielder Hollis Tardy (Dallas, Texas / The Hockaday School) and Sisson, as W&L carried an 8-3 lead into the half.

W&L wasted little time expanding the lead in the second half, with Tucker scoring unassisted goals at 26:52 and 24:28.  Senior midfielder Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md. / Roland Park) then ended the run with a goal off of an assist from first-year attacker Collette Murray (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) with 21:08 left.

Shenandoah (3-10, 1-5) responded with a three-goal spurt to make it an 11-6 game with 6:23 remaining, but W&L closed with four-straight tallies to post its seventh straight victory.

W&L held a 36-18 edge in shots and a 16-7 advantage in draw controls.

Tucker led the Generals with four goals, two assists and seven draw controls, while Soutter tallied three goals, three assists and four ground balls. Tardy and Castelo each added two goals apiece, and Waxter and sophomore midfielder Cordelia Peters (Larkspur, Calif. / Hotchkiss) each caused three turnovers. First-year goalie Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y. / Deerfield Academy) played the entire contest in goal for W&L and made five saves.

Junior attacker Annie McCorry led the Hornets with three goals and four ground balls, while first-year midfielder Jordyn Miller tallied two goals. First-year keeper Kiera Lane played the entire 60 minutes in goal for the Hornets and made nine stops.

W&L returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Guilford for a 4:00 pm start.
