Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The 16th-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team defeated 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon at the Upper Tennis Courts.
Carnegie Mellon posted victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles action. At No. 1 doubles, senior Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga. / Marietta) and sophomore Tessa Hill (Canton, Ohio / Jackson) defeated Nicholle Torres and Cori Sidell, by a score of 8-3.
Donnelly topped Torres, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Hill topped Sidel, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Sophomore Mary Hampton McNeal (Beaufort, S.C. / South Carolina Connections Academy) defeated Courtney Ollis, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.
CMU claimed the No. 4 and No. 6 singles matches to knot the contest at 4-4, but junior Michelle Fleenor (Chattanooga, Tenn. / Girls Preparatory School) beat Jamie Vizelman by a score of 6-0, 6-7, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to secure the 5-4 victory for the Blue and White.
The Generals improve to 11-2 overall with the win and the Tartan's drop to 11-5 overall with the loss.
W&L returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Hollins for a 4:00 pm match.
