Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team scored eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to earn an 11-9 come-from-behind victory over Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
The Royals (10-9, 1-4) led 8-3 entering the bottom of the eighth. Senior left fielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) opened the frame with a walk. Sophomore shortstop Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School) followed with a ball in the hole between third and short, and he beat the throw to first for an infield single.
Senior third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) launched a ball deep to left that hit off the base of the wall, scoring Wasson to trim the deficit to 8-4. Weston notched a double on the play and Feeley advanced to third. EMU then moved junior Damon Frazier from first to pitcher to try and stop the rally.
Frazier immediately walked first-year right fielder Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) to load the bases. Senior catcher Cory Paton (Ashton, Md./St. Johns College) then singled past the glove of the diving second baseman to bring home Feeley and Weston (8-6). On a full count, senior designated hitter Anderson Baldy (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) tied the game, 8-8, on a two-run triple to left center. It marked the first triple of Baldy's career.
After a strikeout, junior second baseman Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) was hit by a pitch on a 1-2 count to put runners on first and third with one out. Junior center fielder Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) roped a ball deep into right, which brought home Baldy and Crane. Ruedisili slid into third for a triple on the play, but the relay throw from the second baseman sailed into foul territory and he came home to push the Generals' (14-6, 5-0 ODAC) advantage to 11-8.
Sophomore Danny Devereux (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) came on in the ninth to try and close out the game. He retired the first two batters, but then walked the next two. Sophomore shortstop Zach Roberts singled on a sharp grounder to first to plate one run and close the gap to 11-9. Devereux ended the game with a strikeout to register his second save of the season.
With the save, Devereux tied the W&L career saves record with 10. Cory Smith '15 also had 10 in his career. First-year Tom Kellogg (San Antonio, Texas/Saint Mary's Hall) earned his first collegiate victory. He allowed one run on two hits in 0.2 innings of relief. Frazier suffered the loss for EMU, giving up five runs (four earned) on three hits in 0.1 innings.
Ruedisili went 2-for-4 in the contest with a game-high three RBI. Baldy was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Monson went 2-for-3 to extend his team-best hitting streak to 14 games.
First-year Kenneth Hartzfeld (Marietta, Ga./Westminster School) threw 4.1 innings of relief to give the Blue and White a chance at a comeback. He gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits, while striking out four.
The Generals and the Royals will play again on Wednesday, this time in Harrisonburg with a scheduled start time of 3:00 pm.
