W&L Baseball Tops Alfred State, 9-1

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team scored five runs in the fifth inning on its way to a 9-1 victory over Alfred State on Sunday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The score was tied, 1-1, entering the bottom of the fifth. Senior catcher Cory Paton (Ashton, Md./St. Johns College) led off the inning with a bunt single down the third-base line. Following a lineout, senior first baseman Jonny Swenson (Newnan, Ga./Newnan) reached on an error by junior shortstop Robert Cardona.

With runners on first and second, junior second baseman Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) laid down another perfect bunt down the third base line to load the bases. Junior center fielder Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) then walked to force in the second run (2-1) for the Generals (13-6). Senior left fielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) lifted a sacrifice fly to right center to bring Swenson across the plate.

Sophomore shortstop Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School) then singled up the middle to bring home two more runs (5-1), and he advanced to third on a throwing error by the first baseman. Feeley tallied the final run of the inning, 6-1, on an RBI single by senior third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula).

The Blue and White added two runs in the seventh on an RBI single by first-year right fielder Ryan Monson (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) and an RBI double by Paton. W&L scored its final run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Feeley.

First-year Jackson Thigpen (Potomac, Md./St. John's College) started the game for the Generals and threw 4.1 innings. He allowed just one run on three hits, while striking out seven. Junior Brian Morgan (Kennesaw, Ga./Allatoona) pitched 2.2 innings of relief to pick up his first victory of the season (1-0). He did not allow a run on just two hits.

Sophomore Garrett Mack (0-1) started for the Pioneers (1-15) and suffered the loss. He allowed six runs (one earned) on four hits in 4.2 innings.

Senior designated hitter Anderson Baldy (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) put the first run on the board for W&L with a solo home run over the 16-foot wall in right in the bottom of the third. Paton was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in the contest, and Feeley led the team with three RBI.

The Generals head back into ODAC play on Tuesday, when they host Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday at 4:00 pm.
