Box Score WINCHESTER, Va. – First-year guard Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn. / Franklin Road Academy) tallied a game-high 19 points to help lead Washington and Lee to a 48-44 victory over Shenandoah in ODAC women's basketball action on Wednesday night at Shingleton Gymnasium.
The Generals (10-11, 6-7) opened up the game with a 6-0 run off of two three-pointers from Casey. However, W&L committed seven turnovers and missed four shots on its just 11 possessions, as the Hornets (4-18, 1-12) used a 9-0 run to take a three-point lead (9-6) with 2:35 left in the first quarter. The Blue & White recovered and scored the game's next four points to take a 10-9 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Hornets started the second period with six points from junior guard Kristyn Arcata to take their largest lead of the period (15-10) with 7:25 remaining. W&L scored the next six points, with three coming from sophomore guard Andi Carrandi (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster), to take a 16-15 lead at the 3:31 mark. However, neither team could pull away and the score was knotted (20-20) at the break.
The contest remained close throughout the third quarter with neither team leading by more than four points. Shenandoah closed the period with a 9-2 surge and took a 31-30 advantage heading into the final stanza.
The Blue and White opened up the fourth with a three-pointer by sophomore guard Catherine Hoy (Irvington, N.Y. / Irvington) and a layup by junior forward Emma Redding (Allentown, Pa. / Allentown) to take a 35-31 lead with 9:07 left and the Generals never trailed again. The Hornets cut it to two points four times in the final 5:22 of the game, but the Generals continually had the answer. Casey finally put the game away with two free throws with two seconds remaining for the four-point victory.
Playing without the services of junior guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale), the Generals shot 39.1 percent (18-46) from the floor, while Shenandoah finished just 29.5 percent (18-61) from the field. W&L held a 43-32 advantage on the board, but committed 21 turnovers compared to Shenandoah's eight.
Casey led the way with 19 points and five rebounds. Carrandi scored a career-best 11 points and tied a career-high with seven rebounds, while junior forward Ailyn Kelly (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) scored four points and hauled in 12 rebounds. Redding added nine points, seven rebounds, five assists and three blocks.
Arcata led SU with 16 points, while first-year forward Jordan Sondrol tallied 10 and French grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
The Generals return to action on Saturday when they host Hollins at 2:00 pm.
