Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The 20th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team scored two goals in the final four minutes to earn a 7-5 victory over Christopher Newport on Wednesday afternoon at the Captains Turf Field.
W&L (2-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening 8:53 of the game on unassisted goals from sophomore midfielder Cordelia Peters (Larkspur, Calif. / Hotchkiss) and senior attacker Olivia Sisson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley).
The Captains (0-1) responded with the next two goals to level the score with 9:28 left in the opening half. Senior attacker Meaghan Galvin fed first-year midfielder Samantha Wettengel for a goal at 17:39, and then she set up junior midfielder Catie Chess for a score just over eight minutes later.
The Generals assumed a three-goal lead (5-2) at the half on three unassisted goals in the final 7:57 of the opening stanza. Sophomore midfielder Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's) scored two of the goals, while junior attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville) also found the back of the net.
W&L controlled the ball on offense for much of the opening 15 minutes of the second half, but it was the Captains that used a 3-0 run to knot the score with 5:22 remaining. Chess assisted on a goal by Galvin at 25:24 to make it 5-3 and Chess later scored her second goal of the day off of a free position shot man-up with 12:08 remaining to make it 5-4. The Captains tied it 5-5 at the 5:22 mark, when senior midfielder Lindsay Weaver found the back of the net off of a feed from junior attacker Carly Wilson.
As she had for much of the game, Tucker won the ensuing draw, leading to senior attacker Sara Holland's (Houston, Texas / M.B. Lamar) game-winning goal 1:30 later off of an assist from Sisson. Senior midfielder Hayley Soutter (McLean, Va. / Langley) sealed the victory with an unassisted goal at the 2:12 mark to reach the final margin.
For the game, W&L held a 12-2 advantage in draw controls led by a game-high eight draw controls from Tucker. The Generals claimed a 23-15 edge in shots, while CNU led the ground ball battle, 12-11.
Tucker paced the Generals with two goals, while Sisson finished with one goal and one assist. First-year Elliot Gilbert (Bedford, N.Y. / Deerfield Academy) played the entire contest in goal for the Blue and White and made seven saves.
Sophomore Emma Walsh suffered the loss for the Captains, but played all 60 minutes and made 11 stops. Chess finished with two goals and an assist for the Captains.
W&L returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts fourth-ranked Franklin & Marshall at 2:00 pm.
