Second Half Carries W&L Men's Basketball Past Guilford, 94-90

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Washington and Lee recovered from a 15-point halftime deficit to post a 94-90 victory over Guilford in ODAC men's basketball action on Wednesday evening at Ragan-Brown Field House.

The Generals (3-2, 2-0) won their third straight contest by overwhelming the Quakers (2-3, 0-1) with 60 second-half points.  The win was W&L's first at Guilford since a 59-50 victory over the Quakers on Dec. 3, 2003.  It was also the Blue & White's first comeback from a double-digit halftime deficit since a Feb. 7, 2011 win at Greensboro.

Guilford led by as many as 18 points on several occasions in the opening 20 minutes, including a 47-29 advantage with just 1:33 remaining in the first period.  The Quakers held a 49-34 lead at the break, but senior guard Nicholas George (Charleston, W. Va. / Charleston Catholic) opened the second half with three triples in the opening 1:32 to set the tone and cut the GC lead to eight points (51-43).

George wasn't the only General who got hot in the second stanza, as W&L scored 34 points over the first 8:33 of the second half to turn the 15-point deficit into a six-point lead (68-62) with 11:27 left in the game.

The 34-13 run was highlighted by eight made three-pointers, including four from first-year guard William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit).  Brueggeman drilled three from beyond the arc in a span of 1:18, the second of which gave W&L its first lead (62-60) since it was 10-8 at the 14:15 mark of the first half.

Guilford battled to take the lead back (69-68) on a jumper by junior forward Alston Thompson with 9:14 left to play.  Brueggeman hit another from distance to give the Generals a 71-69 advantage at the 8:55 mark, but the Quakers reassumed the lead on a Thompson free throw with 8:16 left.  GC extended its lead to as many as five points from there, before a 15-0 run by W&L swung the advantage back and put the game away.

The Blue & White began the decisive run at the 3:27 mark on a jumper by junior guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas / Samuel Clemens).  Brueggeman stole the ball from Thompson on the next possession and Kearns hit another jumper to pull the Generals within one point (80-79) with 2:44 left.  Senior forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) made another steal on the next possession, and junior forward Roy McMillan (Raleigh, N.C. / Broughton) hit a layup and ensuing free throw that gave W&L the lead for good (82-80) with 2:15 remaining.  W&L went 6-for-6 from the free thow line over the next 1:21 to extend the lead to 10 points (90-80) with just 54 seconds left in producing the win.

W&L finished the game 32-for-63 (.508) from the field, including a sizzling 64.5 percent (20-31) in the second half.  The Generals also drilled 9-of-16 (.563) from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes and finished 18-of-22 (.818) from the foul line in the game.

Brueggeman finished with a career-high 21 points, all of which came in the final 15:40 of the contest.  He was 8-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-8 from distance.  Kearns tied a season-high with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while Murtha posted 13 points and seven boards.  McMillan and George chipped in 12 points each.  McMillan added eight rebounds, five assists and three blocks.

Guilford shot 46.9 percent (38-81) from the floor and held a 44-32 advantage on the glass.  Junior forward Carson Long paced the Quakers with 20 points.  Sophomore forward Kyler Gregory added 17 points and five boards, while Thompson finished with 16 markers and eight rebounds.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Ferrum for a 4:00 pm contest.
