Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee men's basketball team went on a 30-14 run toward the end of the first half en route to a 92-67 victory over Hampden-Sydney on Sunday at the Warner Center.
The Generals (2-2, 1-0 ODAC) took control of the game midway through the opening stanza. With 13:01 on the clock, the Blue and White held a 15-11 advantage. The margin quickly ballooned to double-digits, as senior forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) buried a jumper and junior forward Roy McMillan (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) scored back-to-back buckets to put the Generals in front, 21-11, with 11:18 left in the half.
W&L held a 26-17 lead at the 8:04 mark, but then three straight triples by sophomore guard Kevin Dennin (Severna Park, Md./Severn School), first-year guard William Brueggeman (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) and senior guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas/Samuel Clemens) sandwiched around a Tigers' (1-4, 0-1 ODAC) layup stretched the margin to 16 (35-19) with 5:55 remaining in the first.
A few minutes later, the Generals held a 37-25 lead with 4:21 left on the clock, but then went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to extend the advantage to 21 points, 46-25, with 59 seconds on the clock. H-SC closed the half on a 4-0 run to trim the deficit to 46-29.
The Tigers recorded the first basket of the second half to cut the lead to 15 (46-31), but W&L answered with a pair of free throws by first-year forward Curtis Mitchell (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) and a jumper by Kearns to regain a 19-point advantage, 50-31, at the 18:10 mark.
Junior guard Alex Starr (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) hit a three-pointer two minutes later to stretch the lead to 22, and the Blue and White maintained at least a 20-point margin the rest of the contest.
Murtha led the team with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Kearns totaled 16 points, eight assists, five rebounds and three steals. Starr shot 4-of-6 from the floor, registering 12 points. Mitchell grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds.
The Generals held H-SC to 38.1 percent (24-of-63) from the floor and 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from downtown. The Tigers also committed 21 turnovers.
W&L tied a season-high 10 three-pointers, as it connected on 40.0 percent (10-of-25) of its attempts behind the arc. The Blue and White also shot 44.9 percent (31-of-69) from the floor and had 18 turnovers.
Junior guard Malik Crute led H-SC with 14 points, four assists and five steals. Senior forward Nick Chase and first-year guard Jake Furrow each had nine points.
The Generals next play at 18th-ranked Guilford on Wednesday at 5:00 pm.
