Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior guard Emily Perszyk (Greendale, Wis. / Greendale) scored a career-high 37 points on 9-of-15 shooting to help lead the Washington and Lee women's basketball team to a 74-68 victory over Randolph-Macon in ODAC action on Tuesday night at the Warner Center.
The two teams entered the fourth tied at 49-49. The Generals (9-10, 5-6) opened the quarter with a three from first-year guard Taylor Casey (Brentwood, Tenn. / Franklin Road Academy) to take a 52-49 advantage with 9:40 remaining. The Yellow Jackets (10-9, 5-6) scored on the next two plays to grab a 53-52 lead at the 8:38 mark. W&L tallied five straight points off of a three from Perszyk and a layup from first-year forward Andy Smithey (Charlotte, N.C. / Saint Mary's School) to take a four-point lead (57-53) with seven minutes left.
Both teams exchanged made shots over the next four minutes with the Generals maintaining the lead throughout. First-year guard Michal Ross scored three points off of an old-fashioned three-point play, and junior guard Kareema Conteh hit a pair of free throws to bring the Yellow Jackets within two (65-63) with three minutes left.
Perszyk hit four free throws in the next two plays to give the Blue and White a 69-63 lead with 2:03 remaining. R-MC hit a free throw, and first-year forward Kelly Williams made a layup to trim the deficit to 69-66 with 34 seconds left, but Randolph-Macon would get no closer, as W&L hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 30 seconds to secure the victory.
Perszyk's 37 points tied for the second-most scored in a game in program history. She also tied her own school record for free throws made and attempted in a game, going 17-of-19 from the foul line. Smithey finished with 10 points, three assists and two steals, while Casey tallied nine points.
W&L shot 44.2 percent (23-52) from the floor and hit 22-of-27 (.815) from the charity stripe. The Generals also forced R-MC into 21 turnovers. The Yellow Jackets hit 41.3 percent (26-63) from the field, but went 0-of-4 from behind the arc.
Williams paced Randolph-Macon with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Junior forward Amber Lee totaled 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Ross finished with 12 points.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Virginia Wesleyan for a 2:00 pm contest.
