Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior attacker Lauren Procaccino (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) scored six goals to lead the Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a 16-5 victory over Roanoke in ODAC action on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Maroons (4-7, 2-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the 19:04 mark on two goals by senior midfielder Meredith Bigelow (Annapolis, Md. / Homeschool) and a goal by senior attacker Nicole Zelnik (Hercules, Calif. / Bishop O'Dowd). However, the Generals (7-5, 5-0) responded with two goals by first-year midfielder Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's School) to make the score 3-2.
Zelnik struck again with 9:42 remaining in the first half when she scored off of a free position shot, but W&L took a 7-4 lead into halftime after junior midfielder Hollis Tardy (Dallas, Texas / The Hockaday School) ignited a five-goal run with 7:21 on the clock. Tardy tallied two goals in the spurt, while Procaccino scored three times.
The Blue and White opened the second stanza with 5-0 run, with three goals by Procaccino and two goals by sophomore attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) to make the score 12-4 with 19:50 remaining in regulation.
Roanoke's junior attacker Courtney McCartin (Ashton, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel) found the back of the net off of an assist from senior attacker Claire Feeney (Old Greenwich, Conn. / Greenwich) at the 19:32 mark (12-5).
W&L ended the game on a 4-0 spurt to reach the final margin of 16-5.
For the contest, Washington and Lee held an advantage in shots (45-13), ground balls (20-10) and draw controls (18-5).
First-year keeper Ellie Aburn (Towson, Md. / Notre Dame Preparatory) played the duration in goal for the Generals and posted five saves. First-year goalie Victoria Smith (Greensboro, Md. / North Caroline) suffered the loss for the Maroons, playing 37:05 and making nine saves. First-year Emma Blair (Salem, Va. / Salem) saw the remaining 22:55 and registered six saves.
Procaccino finished with six goals, three ground balls and three draw controls. Senior attacker Melissa Coggins (St. John's, Fla. / Bartram Trail) dished out two assists, which pushed her career total to 86 and tied her for third all-time at Washington and Lee with Amanda Strickler '06. Kelsi Robinson '09 finished her career with 101 assists and is second all-time in program history. Sophomore defender Riley Garcia (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) recorded a career-high seven caused turnovers.
Bigelow and Zelnik each scored two goals for Roanoke, while McCartin and Feeney had one assist apiece.
W&L returns to action on April 16 when it travels to Randolph for a 7:00 pm contest.
