Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore pitcher Colin Morse (Vienna, Va./McLean) threw a complete game to lead eighth-ranked Shenandoah to a 4-1 victory over the Washington and Lee baseball team on Tuesday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
The Hornets (20-6, 8-4 ODAC) took a one-run lead in the top of the first on a RBI single by junior designated hitter Jake Loew (Binghamton, N.Y./Binghamton), and added three more runs to their lead in the third. With two outs and a runner on second for Shenandoah, Loew was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.
Junior third baseman Nate Loman (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) then singled up the middle to plate senior center fielder Joe Coleman (Gaithersburg, Md./Colonel Zadok Magruder) and extend the lead to 2-0. Senior left fielder Lew Johnson (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) walked to load the bases, and first-year first baseman Ryan Glendon (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) followed with another base on balls to force in the Hornets' third run.
Loman stretched the lead to 4-0, when he scored on an error by sophomore shortstop Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep), but Crane ended the inning when he threw out Johnson at the plate for the third out.
The Generals (22-10, 10-5 ODAC) notched their lone run in the bottom of the sixth. W&L had runners on second and third after junior left fielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) singled, and sophomore right fielder Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla./The Benjamin School) doubled to start the frame.
Senior center fielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) lined the ball to the shortstop for the first out and both runners could not advance. Wasson came home on a ground out to second by junior third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula), but Morse was able to end the inning by forcing senior designated hitter Riley Stout (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) to fly out to center field. The Blue and White failed to get a runner to third base in the final three innings.
Morse scattered seven hits and allowed just one run in 9.0 innings, while improving to 4-0. He also struck out two and walked two. Senior Kyle Tipping (Green Lane, Pa./The Hill School) started for W&L and went 3.0 innings. He gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits, but walked four batters to fall to 4-3.
The Generals used five pitchers over the final six innings, holding the Hornets scoreless with only four hits. Ruedisili ended the game 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, and first-year second baseman Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School) went 2-for-4 with a double. The loss ended the Blue and White's eight-game winning streak.
W&L will take finals week off and then return to action on Saturday, April 16, when it hosts Emory & Henry for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm.
