No. 19 W&L Women's Lacrosse Defeats R-MC, 10-9

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior attacker Melissa Coggins (St. John's, Fla. / Bartram Trail) scored the game-winning goal with 2:02 left in the contest to give the 19th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team a 10-9 victory over Randolph-Macon on Wednesday evening at Day Field.

Junior attacker Lauren Procaccino (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) scored a goal and dished out an assist in the opening 3:55 of the game as the Generals (10-5, 8-0) jumped out to a 3-0 lead at the 26:05 mark of the first half.

Sophomore midfielder Alicia Hsieh tallied the Yellow Jackets' (10-5, 7-1) first goal with 24:49 on the clock, then senior attacker Shannon Jamieson found the back of the net at the 21:54 mark off of a free position shot to cut the lead to 3-2.

Junior midfielder Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md. / Roland Park Country School) made the score 4-2 with 17:16 remaining in the first stanza after she beat junior goalie Allie Walker, but Hsieh struck again when she scored a free position goal at the 13:35 mark (4-3).

The Blue and White carried an 8-3 lead into intermission after Procaccino capped a four-goal run with 2:54 left in the half. Junior midfielder Olivia Sisson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley) scored twice during the spurt.

Randolph-Macon scored three-straight to make it an 8-6 game with 22:00 on the clock in the second stanza. First-year attacker Maddy Graves (Cos Cob, Conn. / Greenwich) stopped the rally briefly with a goal at the 15:11 mark. However, R-MC used another three-goal run to tie the game 9-9.

Coggins tallied the game-winner off of a free position shot after the Yellow Jackets were whistled for a foul with 2:02 remaining in the game to reach the final margin of 10-9.

For the contest, W&L held a 26-25 edge in shots and a 12-9 advantage in draw controls. The Generals also grabbed 15 ground balls, as opposed to the Yellow Jackets' 13.

First-year Ellie Aburn (Towson, Md. / Notre Dame Preparatory) played the duration in goal and stopped 11 shots. Walker suffered the loss for R-MC, seeing all 60 minutes of action and making seven saves.

Sisson posted three goals, three ground balls and five draw controls. Procaccino notched two goals, one assist and two ground balls.

Hsieh finished with five goals, while Jamieson recorded three goals and one assist.

W&L returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Hollins for a 1:00 pm contest.
