Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – The 19th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team held a 17-8 advantage in draw controls en route to a 19-6 triumph over Guilford in ODAC action on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (9-5, 7-0) jumped out to a 5-0 lead just 4:51 into the contest. Sophomore attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) and senior attacker Melissa Coggins (St. John's, Fla. / Bartram Trail) tallied two goals apiece, while first-year midfielder Brianna Hayes (Commack, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) scored once.
The Quakers (7-8, 5-3) responded at the 25:23 mark when senior midfielder Marina Bailey (Rockville, Md. / Thomas S. Wootton) found the back of the net to make the score 5-1.
Junior attacker Lauren Procaccino (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) beat junior keeper Sammi Milbourn (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Lake Zurich) with 22:05 on the clock (6-1), but first-year midfielder Holly Kozak (Suffolk, Va. / Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) notched an unassisted goal 2:52 later to cut the Blue and White's lead to 6-2.
Procaccino ignited a 6-0 run for W&L at the 17:21 mark and scored twice during the spurt to make the score 12-2 with 11:48 remaining in the first half.
Bailey found the back of the net off of a free position shot with 9:05 left on the clock (12-3). However, first-year midfielder Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's School) notched her third goal of the game at the 1:56 mark and junior midfielder Hollis Tardy (Dallas, Texas / The Hockaday School) posted her second marker of the stanza with 25 seconds remaining, and the Generals took a 14-3 lead into intermission.
Hayes opened up the second half with a free position goal at the 26:12 mark (15-3), but Guilford retaliated with back-to-back goals from first-year attacker Amanda Dionne (Nashua, N.H. / Tabor Academy) and sophomore midfielder Carter MacLeod (Annapolis, Md. / Key School) to make the score 15-5 with 20:54 left in the contest.
First-year midfielder Morgan Dougherty (New York, N.Y. / Convent of the Sacred Heart) capped a Generals' four-goal run with 5:04 remaining in the game to increase the lead to 19-5, but Kozak struck again when she beat sophomore goalie Harleigh Bean (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Episcopal) with 42 seconds remaining to reach the final margin of 19-6.
For the game, W&L outshot Guilford, 33-20, and both teams picked up 13 ground balls.
First-year Ellie Aburn (Towson, Md. / Notre Dame Preparatory) played 30 minutes in goal for the Generals and stopped five shots. Sophomore Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) saw 19:32 of action and made three saves, while Bean played the remaining 10:28. Milbourn and sophomore Sarah Sedaghat (Raleigh, N.C. / Athens Drive) split time in net for the Quakers, and combined for seven saves.
Procaccino led the Blue and White with four points on three goals and one assist.
Bailey and Kozak paced Guilford with two goals each.
W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Randolph-Macon for a 7:00 pm contest.
