Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team was held to four runs, as Hampden-Sydney earned a doubleheader sweep of W&L on Saturday at Ty Cobb Ballpark.
The Tigers (26-13, 12-8 ODAC) came from behind to win game one, 2-1, in 11 innings. H-SC scored the first seven runs of the second contest to beat the Generals (25-12, 13-7 ODAC), 7-5.
In the opener, the Blue and White held a 1-0 lead entering the eighth inning. The Tigers loaded the bases with two outs, but first-year pitcher Danny Devereux (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) escaped the jam by forcing sophomore designated hitter Moe Gothe to ground out to first.
W&L recorded two hits in the top of the ninth, but failed to add to the lead. Senior shortstop Lee Carneal walked to open the bottom of the inning for H-SC. Senior second baseman John Lloyd followed with a triple to tie the game at 1-1. Devereux got the next three batters out to send the game to extra innings.
The Generals put a runner in scoring position in the 10th and 11th innings, but failed to push a run across the plate. With first-year Andrew Earvolino (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) on the mound in the 11th, Gothe doubled to open the frame.
A sacrifice moved Gothe to third with one out. Following an intentional walk, a steal and then another intentional walk, first-year third baseman Jacob Fontana hit a sacrifice fly to left field, and Gothe came home on the play to give Hampden-Sydney a 2-1 victory.
Senior Matt Hinson (1-0) came out of the bullpen to earn the win for the Tigers. He pitched 2.0 innings, holding the Generals scoreless on two hits. Earvolino (0-3) suffered the loss for W&L. He gave up one run in 0.2 innings. Junior Tom Concklin (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) started the game and gave up zero runs on one hit.
The Blue and White scored its lone run in the top of the third. Junior first baseman Jonny Swenson (Newnan, Ga./Newnan) singled to start the inning. Sophomore shortstop Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) doubled to put runners on second and third, and then Swenson scored the run on a ground out by junior catcher Cory Paton (Ashton, Md./St. Johns College).
In game two, Hampden-Sydney scored three runs in the third on a two-run double by junior center fielder Cody Smith and a RBI double by Carneal. The Tigers extended their lead to 7-0 in the sixth, as H-SC tallied four runs with the help of two W&L errors.
The Generals had a two-out rally in the top of the seventh. With two outs and runners on first and second, senior center fielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) registered a one-run single. Senior third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) followed with a RBI single, and then Myer scored on a wild pitch to trim the lead to 7-3.
In the top of the ninth, Myer recorded a RBI double. Then Weston had a RBI groundout, but the Tigers escaped the ninth with a 7-5 victory.
