Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — First-year second baseman Chadwick Feeley's (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School) two-out double in the bottom eighth started a five-run rally, which propelled the Washington and Lee baseball team to a 13-8 victory over Bridgewater on Tuesday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
The Generals (25-10, 13-5 ODAC) led 8-6 entering the top of the eighth, but the Eagles (20-16, 10-8 ODAC) senior shortstop Cavin Clyde (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) ripped a two-out two-run double off the wall in left center to tie the game at 8-8.
Senior center fielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) led off the bottom of the frame with a single up the middle, and then stole second to get into scoring position. With two outs and down in the count 1-2, Feeley ripped the ball just inside the bag down the third base line to push Myer across the plate and give W&L a 9-8 lead.
Junior first baseman Jonny Swenson (Newnan, Ga./Newnan) was hit by and pitch and then sophomore shortstop Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) walked to load the bases. Junior catcher Cory Paton (Ashton, Md./St. Johns College) followed with a hard grounder off the glove of the sliding second baseman to score two more Generals (11-8). Junior left fielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) singled into right to bring home Crane, and then Paton scored when the Bridgewater right fielder overran the baseball on the play.
First-year Danny Devereux (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) pitched the final 1.2 innings of the game to improve to 4-1. He allowed two inherited runners to score, but was charged with no earned runs on one hit and two strikeouts. Senior Steven Woerner (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst) suffered the loss for Bridgewater to fall to 3-3. He gave up five runs (four earned) on four hits.
Myer finished the game 4-for-4 with a RBI and three runs scored. Wasson went 2-for-6 with two RBI and the first home run of his collegiate career. Paton totaled four RBI and junior third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) and Feeley each were 3-for-5.
The 13 runs marked a season-high for the Generals, and the team registered a season-best 21 hits. The contest marked the final home game for W&L, and the team set a new program record with 16 wins (16-4). The previous mark was 15 set by the 2000 squad.
The 25 wins overall are the third-most in program history. The team went 28-8 in 2003 and 27-13 in 2005. With a loss by Roanoke on Sunday to Randolph-Macon the Generals secured a spot in the ODAC Tournament. The Blue and White is currently tied with Shenandoah for the top spot in the conference, although the Hornets hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.
The Generals play their final games of the regular season on Saturday, when they play a doubleheader at Hampden-Sydney, starting at 12:00 pm.
