Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior center fielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) went 3-for-7 with a home run and six RBI to lead the Washington and Lee baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Emory & Henry on Saturday.
Junior pitcher Tom Concklin (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) gave up one run in 7.0 innings, and the Generals (24-10, 12-5 ODAC) scored five runs in the seventh to take game one, 8-1. W&L built an early lead in the second contest, but needed a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 10-6 victory.
Concklin scattered eight hits over 7.0 innings to improve to 7-0 in the opener. The only run he allowed came in the fifth inning on a solo home run by senior right fielder Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va./Virginia Wesleyan). Concklin also struck out six batters.
The Blue and White took control of the contest in the seventh with five runs. The team entered the inning with a 3-1 advantage. W&L scored its fourth run (4-1) on an error by the Wasps' (9-27, 4-13 ODAC) first-year third baseman Eli Straw (Radford, Va./Radford).
Then with two outs and a runner on second, Myer doubled down the left field line to plate (5-1) junior left fielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion). Junior third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) followed with a double to push the score to 6-1. After senior designated hitter Riley Stout (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) was hit by a pitch, first-year second baseman Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School) lined a RBI single to left. Stout notched the final run of the game (8-1) when he scored on a wild pitch.
Senior Aaron Sparks (Troutman, N.C./Catawba Valley) took the loss for E&H to fall to 2-7. He gave up eight runs (three earned) on 12 hits.
In the second game, the Generals grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first on a three-run homer over the left field wall by Myer. It marked the first collegiate home run for Myer and the fourth of the season for W&L.
The Blue and White held a 6-2 lead entering the seventh, but the Wasps tied the game with four runs in the frame, including the final two with two outs. The Generals responded by loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning. Junior first baseman Jonny Swenson (Newnan, Ga./Newnan) hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Myer and give W&L a 7-6 lead.
After a wild pitch put runners on second and third, sophomore shortstop Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) hit a two-run single to right center to stretch the advantage to 9-6. Crane then stole second, and the Generals notched their final tally (10-6) on a RBI double to right center by junior catcher Cory Paton (Ashton, Md. / St. Johns College).
First-year Danny Devereux (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) recorded the win out of the bullpen to move to 3-1. He gave up one run on three hits in 2.0 innings, while registering one strikeout. First-year Brandon Stetkiewicz (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) took the loss for E&H to fall to 0-1. He faced two batters in the seventh and did not record an out. He was charged with two earned runs.
Along with Myers six RBI, he also scored three runs and had a steal. Crane finished the day 6-for-8 with three RBI, three runs scored and a steal.
The 24 wins are the most for the Generals since the team went 27-13 during the 2005 season. W&L returns to action on Tuesday for its final home game against Bridgewater at 4:00 pm.
