Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. –The Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team held an 18-8 advantage in draw controls en route to an 18-6 triumph over Shenandoah in ODAC action on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (3-5, 1-0) opened the contest with a 5-0 run ignited by a goal from junior midfielder Maggie Waxter (Baltimore, Md. / Roland Park Country School) just 2:59 into the game. First-year attacker Maddy Graves (Cos Cob, Conn. / Greenwich) tallied two goals during the spurt.
The Hornets (2-7, 0-1) got on the board at the 21:27 mark when sophomore midfielder Jackie Hemler (Lancaster, Pa. / Penn Manor) scored an unassisted goal to make the score 5-1.
Graves capped another Generals' 5-0 run when she recorded her third goal of the contest with 5:31 remaining in the first half. Shenandoah sophomore midfielder Abby Zorilla (Lancaster, Pa. / Lampeter-Strasburg) posted the Hornets' second goal with 3:29 left on the clock (10-2).
Sophomore attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) tallied the last two goals of the first stanza, as W&L took a 12-2 lead into intermission.
The Blue and White scored the first two goals in the opening 9:02 of the second half to grab a 14-2 advantage. Then each team tallied four goals in the final 20:58 to reach the final margin of 18-6.
For the game, W&L held a 12-9 edge in ground balls and outshot Shenandoah, 35-15.
First-year Ellie Aburn (Towson, Md. / Notre Dame Preparatory) and sophomores Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) and Harleigh Bean (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Episcopal) all saw action in goal for the Generals and combined for seven saves. Sophomore Rachel Levy (Mahopac, N.Y. / Wooster School) suffered the loss for the Hornets, seeing 43:02 of action in net and stopping seven shots. First-year Brittany Bain (Lexington Park, Md. / St. Mary's Ryken) played the remaining 16:58 and made one save.
Graves led the Blue and White with four goals and Castelo finished with three goals. Senior attackers Carly Taglienti (Moorestown, N.J. / Moorestown) and Melissa Coggins (St. John's, Fla. / Bartram Trail) dished out two assists each.
Zorilla and Hemler had two goals each for Shenandoah.
W&L returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Lynchburg for a 1:00 pm contest.
