LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior pitcher Kyle Walsh (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) threw a one-hit complete game shutout to lead Averett to an 8-0 victory over the Washington and Lee baseball team on Wednesday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

Walsh needed 113 pitches to stymie the Generals (10-5), and he struck out eight batters with only three walks. Senior pitcher Kyle Tipping (Green Lane, Pa./The Hill School) took the loss for W&L. He went 5.0 innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits. He also struck out four batters.

The Cougars (4-6) grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the second on a RBI single by senior right fielder Drew Evans (Durham, N.C./Riverside). In the third inning, AU stretched the advantage to 2-0 on a sacrifice fly by Walsh.

Averett took complete command of the game with three runs in the fifth. With runners on second and third, sophomore shortstop Kyle Vidano (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) singled up the middle to push the score to 4-0. Vidano then stole second and third and came home on Walsh's second sacrifice fly of the game (5-0). The Cougars added three more runs in the seventh to reach the final margin.

Sophomore shortstop Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) recorded W&L's lone hit in the third. He grounded a ball down the third base line. Senior third baseman Noah Greenblatt (Fuquay-Varina, N.C./Cary Academy) made a backhanded stab, but his throw did not beat Crane to first. Crane was also the only Generals' base runner to get into scoring position. He advanced to second on a two-base throwing error in the sixth, but was left stranded on second.

This marked the second time this season the Blue and White was held scoreless, as the team's only other home loss came on February 21 to Southern Vermont, 3-0. 

The Generals open ODAC play on Saturday, when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
