Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — Junior third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) homered and doubled to lead the Washington and Lee baseball team to a 6-1 victory over Southern Virginia on Tuesday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
Holding a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, Weston launched a solo home run over the left field wall to push the Generals' (14-7) lead to 2-0. It marked the second straight game Weston has homered.
W&L added three more runs in the fifth. With runners on first and second and two outs, Weston ripped a double off the wall in left to plate sophomore right fielder Robey Smalley (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Tuscaloosa Academy) and senior center fielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy). Senior catcher Riley Stout (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) followed with another double to left to score Weston and push the lead to 5-0.
Sophomore pitcher David Van Geluwe (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) started for the Blue and White and threw 6.0 scoreless innings. He allowed just two hits and a walk, while striking out four to earn the first win (1-1) of his collegiate career.
The Knights (5-11) scored their lone run in the top of the seventh on a throwing error by first-year second baseman Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School). Later in the frame with the bases loaded and W&L holding a 5-1 lead, sophomore pitcher Brian Morgan (Kennesaw, Ga./Allatoona) came on in relief and forced sophomore left fielder Ryan Saunders (Christiansburg, Va./Christiansburg) to ground into a double play to end the inning.
Morgan pitched the final 2.2 innings, and registered the first save of his collegiate career. He did not give up a run on two hits. Sophomore Jonathan Hodges (Cleveland, Tenn./Bradley Central) started for SVU and took the loss. He allowed three runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings to fall to 0-1.
Weston finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Stout was 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Weston went 4-for-4 with two runs and a RBI.
The Generals play at Shenandoah on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
