Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and lee baseball team erupted for 11 runs on 16 hits en route to an 11-2 victory over New York University on Sunday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. Sophomore right fielder Robey Smalley (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Tuscaloosa Academy) paced the offense, as he went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs.
The Generals (10-4) took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a RBI ground out by senior center fielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) and a RBI single to center by Smalley. The Blue and White added two more in the third on back-to-back RBI doubles by Myer and Smalley.
The Violets (0-3) scored their only two runs of the game in the sixth on a throwing error by sophomore third baseman Paul Diven (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Tuscaloosa Academy). W&L answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to extend the lead to 6-2. First-year second baseman Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School) singled up the middle to plate first-year designated hitter Scott Simmons (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Academy), and then junior catcher Cory Paton (Ashton, Md./St. Johns College) scored on a wild pitch.
The Generals pushed the advantage to 7-2 in the seventh on a RBI double by Diven, and then W&L scored four runs in the eighth to reach the final margin. Myer finished the game 1-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored. Paton had three hits and three runs and Feeley recorded three hits, two RBI and two runs. Simmons went 2-for-5 with three runs.
First-year pitcher Kevin McHugh (Forest Hill, Md./McDonogh School) threw 7.0 innings to improve to 3-1 on the season. He gave up two unearned runs on six hits, while striking out six. First-year Colman Hendershot (Lubbock, Texas/Coronado) suffered the loss for NYU. He allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits in 3.2 innings.
The 11 runs and 16 hits were both season-highs for the Generals. The Blue and White have now won three games in a row and are 7-1 at home. W&L has already surpassed its win total (eight) from last season.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, when they host Averett for a 3:00 pm contest.
