Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team used timely hitting and dominant pitching to secure a doubleheader sweep over New York University on Saturday.
The Generals (9-4) scored five runs in the seventh inning of game one to earn a 6-1 win and then junior pitcher Anderson Baldy (Tampa, Fla./Berkeley Prep) threw a complete game in the second contest to lead the team to a 3-1 victory.
The Violets (0-2) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third of game one on a RBI double by sophomore shortstop Jake Smith (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland). W&L was held hitless by sophomore Cameron Serapilio-Frank (Rochester, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) through the first six innings.
In the seventh with one out, first-year designated hitter Scott Simmons (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Academy) was hit by a pitch. Sophomore right fielder Robey Smalley (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Tuscaloosa Academy) doubled to left center to put runners on second and third. First-year Julian Henry (Maplewood, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) came on in relief of Serapilio-Frank and walked sophomore third baseman Paul Diven (Sparrows Point, Md./Archbishop Spalding) to load the bases.
Junior first baseman Jonny Swenson (Newnan, Ga./Newnan) hit a two-run double down the left field line to give W&L a 2-1 advantage. Following a line out, sophomore shortstop Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) was hit by a pitch to again load the bases. Junior catcher Cory Paton (Ashton, Md./St. Johns College) cleared the bases with a double to right center to push the Blue and White lead to 5-1.
The Generals added one more run in the eighth on a RBI double by Diven. Junior Tom Concklin (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) started the game and gave up one run on six hits in 5.0 innings. Sophomore Tyler Murphy (Chesapeake, Va./Greenbrier Christian Academy) pitched 2.0 innings of relief to earn the first victory of his collegiate career and improve to 1-0. Serapilio-Frank (0-1) suffered the loss for NYU. He allowed two runs on one hit and one walk.
Baldy (1-0) pitched all seven innings of game two and only allowed one run on four hits. He struck out two, while walking three. NYU took the early lead on a one-run double by junior left fielder Adrian Spitz (Los Angeles, Calif./Beverly Hills) in the fourth.
W&L was without a hit through the first four innings, but back-to-back one-out singles by Smalley and junior left fielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) put the Generals in position for their first run. After a flyout, Swenson knocked a two-out single into left to plate Smalley and knot the game at 1-1.
With the game still tied and two outs in the bottom of the sixth, senior catcher Riley Stout (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) walked on a full count. First-year Ben Decembrino (Yardley, Penn./Holy Ghost Prep) came on as a pinch runner, and then Smalley singled to left to put runners on first and second. Wasson hit a towering fly ball off the wall in left to score both runners and give W&L a 3-1 advantage. Baldy recorded the final three outs in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.
Sophomore pitcher Michael Vokulich (Encino, Calif./Harvard-Westlake) suffered the loss for NYU to fall to 0-1. He pitched 5.2 innings and gave up three runs on five hits.
The Generals host NYU on Sunday for a single game at 1:00 pm.
