Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Mary Washington recovered from a 6-3 first-half deficit to claim an 8-7 victory over the 16th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team on Saturday at Watt Field.
W&L (0-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead just 1:04 into the game on goals by first-year midfielder Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's School) and first-year attacker Kate Lesch (Bedford, N.H. / Bedford). However, the Eagles (2-0) scored two unanswered to knot the game at 2-2 with 21:07 to play in the opening half.
The Generals responded with two more goals, one by first-year attacker Maddy Graves (Cos Cob, Conn. / Greenwich) and another by first-year midfielder Brianna Hayes (Commack, N.Y. / St. Anthony's), to assume a 4-2 lead at the 12:17 mark. Junior midfielder Sabrina Elliott (Fairfax, Va. / W.T. Woodson) scored her second goal of the opening half for UMW to make it 4-3 with 11:25 left, but senior attacker Melissa Coggins (St. John's, Fla. / Bartram Trail) and sophomore attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) both scored for W&L to advance the lead to 6-3 with 2:33 remaining. Elliott ended the first-half scoring with her third goal at the 1:35 mark.
The Eagles opened the second half with goals by first-year attacker Julia Albert (Upper Montclair, N.J. / Montclair) at the 23:39 mark and first-year midfielder Mackenzie Maguire (Sparta, N.J. / Sparta) at 22:44 to knot the game at 6-6. Coggins scored her second goal at 20:03 to give W&L the lead back (7-6), but the Generals were unable to get another shot off in the contest.
UMW tied it on a free position goal by sophomore defender Kirsten Littlefield (Milstone Township, N.J. / Allentown) at 19:37 and took its first and only lead with another free position goal by junior attacker Kelsey Vincent (Salisbury, Md. / James M. Bennett) at 13:12.
Mary Washington held a 14-8 edge on shots and W&L had a 14-10 advantage on ground balls.
Coggins led the Generals with two goals, while Tucker posted one goal and one assist, to go along with three draw controls. Senior defender Caroline Hutchinson (Annapolis, Md. / St. Mary's) added four ground balls and two turnovers. Sophomore Hannah Wiltshire (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) played the duration in goal and made two saves.
Elliott scored three goals and Albert tallied two scores to lead the Eagles. Sophomore Kelsey Welsh (Haddonfield, N.J. / Haddonfield) played all 60 minutes in goal and did not make a save.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to St. Mary's (Md.) for a 3:00 pm contest.
