W&L Baseball Tops Southern Virginia, 5-3

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team took advantage of five Southern Virginia errors to earn a 5-3 victory on Thursday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

Holding a 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the sixth, first-year second baseman Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla./Episcopal School) walked to start the inning. After a groundout, junior third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) reached on an error by the shortstop and Feeley advanced to third.

Weston then stole second base to put runners on second and third with one out. Sophomore right fielder Robey Smalley (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Tuscaloosa Academy) was up next and he hit a grounder to first. The first baseman came home with the throw, but Feeley slid safely into the plate to score. The catcher threw the ball back to first in an attempt to get Smalley out, but the ball was dropped, which allowed Weston to come home and push the Generals' (5-1) lead to 3-0.

The Knights (2-3) made a pitching change, but new pitcher Seth Burris (Galax, Va./Carroll County) sandwiched two walks around a foul out to load the bases. W&L scored its final run of the inning, when sophomore shortstop Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) walked with the bases loaded to stretch the margin to 4-0.

SVU scored its first tally of the game in the seventh on a RBI single by first-year second baseman Jordan Nase (Prince George, Va./Prince George). The Generals answered with a run in the bottom of the inning. With one out, sophomore designated hitter Paul Diven (Sparrows Point, Md./Archbishop Spalding) doubled down the left field line. First-year Ben Decembrino (Yardley, Penn./Holy Ghost Prep) pinch ran and advanced to third on a ground out. Decembrino then scored on a wild pitch to bring the score to 5-1.

The Knights rallied in the top of the ninth. The first two batters of the inning walked, and then the Generals brought in first-year pitcher Danny Devereux (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect). He gave up a single to Nase to load the bases and then walked the next batter to force in a run (5-2). Devereux struck out the next hitter on a full count, but W&L made another pitching change with one out.

Sophomore Tyler Murphy (Chesapeake, Va./Greenbrier Christian Academy) came on and walked the first batter to bring SVU to within two, 5-3, with still only one out. Murphy then forced senior designated hitter Kenneth Lane (Knoxville, Tenn./Finlandia University) to ground into a 3-2-3 double play to end the game.

Senior Kyle Tipping (Green Lane, Pa./The Hill School) started the game and pitched 6.0 innings to earn the victory. He did not allow a run, while surrendering just three hits. He also struck out three batters. Murphy recorded his second save of the season, while pitching 0.2 innings.

Junior pitcher Justin King (San Ramon, Calif./California) was the tough-luck loser for the Knights. He tossed 5.1 innings, and gave up four unearned runs on three hits.

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they play against Marymount at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Va., at 12:30 pm.
