Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Washington and Lee baseball team survived blustery conditions to split a double-header with Greensboro College on Saturday afternoon. W&L (4-1) fell 1-0 in game one and recovered to post a 4-3 victory in 10 innings in game two.
In game one, neither team could find much offensive traction as the two teams combined for just seven total hits. The Pride (1-3) pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning when junior right fielder Zach Neumeister led off with a double to center field. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a fielder's choice by sophomore first baseman Adam Murray.
First-year right hander Danny Devereux (Mount Prospect, Ill. / Prospect) was saddled with the loss, surrendering just one hit in 1.1 innings of work. Sophomore center fielder Kyle Ruedisili (Jupiter, Fla. / The Benjamin School), junior third baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) and junior first baseman Jonny Swenson (Newnan, Ga. / Newnan) all had one hit to pace the Generals offensively. Ruedisili had a double and a stolen base.
Four different players had a hit for Greensboro, while senior left hander Wil McGuire threw 2/3 of an inning and did not allow a base runner in picking up the win.
In the nightcap, the Generals pushed across the winning run on an error in the 10th inning. Sophomore left fielder Robey Smalley (Tuscaloosa, Ala. / Tuscaloosa Academy) started the inning with a double and advanced to third on a ground ball to the pitcher by Swenson. Smalley then scored when Greensboro first-year left fielder Daniel Efird misplayed a fly ball by junior left fielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa. / Lower Merion).
W&L jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as first-year second baseman Chadwick Feeley (Jacksonville, Fla. / Episcopal School) led off the game with a double. Sophomore designated hitter Paul Diven (Sparrows Point, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) walked with two outs and both players moved up a base on a wild pitch. They then scored on a error by Neumeister when he misplayed a fly ball by Weston.
The Pride got on the board in the bottom half of the inning when junior third baseman Mac Graham led off with a double and later scored when senior designated hitter Brian Robbett reached base on an error by Swenson. Neumeister singled Robbett to third and junior center fielder Braden Soden delivered an RBI single that scored Robbett.
Greensboro took a 3-2 lead in the second frame when junior first baseman Andrew Ray led off the inning with a double. He moved to third on a single by sophomore catcher Matthew Denham and scored on a sacrifice fly by shortstop junior Andrew Hernandez.
W&L knotted the contest in the top of the third when Ruedisili opened the inning with a double and scored on an RBI single by Weston. From there, neither team got much traction until the Generals pushed across the game-winner in the top of the 10th inning.
Ruedisili led the Generals at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles, two stolen bases and one run scored. Smalley was 2-of-5 with a double and a run scored. First-year right hander Kevin McHugh (Forest Hill, Md. / McDonogh School) earned the win, striking out four while allowing two hits and no runs in 4.0 innings. Senior right hander Kyle Tipping (Green Lane, Pa. / The Hill School) allowed one hit, one walk and had one strikeout in the final inning to earn the save.
Greensboro was paced by Soden, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Junior right hander Edward Dorunda pitched 1.2 inning and took the loss, allowing two hits and one run.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Southern Virginia for a 3:00 pm contest.
