Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. — University of Rochester senior guards Mack Montague and Sam Borst-Smith combined for 43 points, and the Washington and Lee men's basketball team turned the ball over 22 times in a 77-50 victory for the Yellowjackets in the championship game of the Chuck Resler Tournament on Saturday.
The two teams were tied at 7-7 with 13:31 left in the opening half, but a pair of free throws by Borst-Smith started a 12-0 run for Rochester (3-0). The spurt covered almost six minutes of game action and gave the Yellowjackets at 19-7 lead with 7:51 left in the first.
Rochester extended the advantage to 14 (32-18) on its final possession in the stanza, but a three-pointer by first-year guard Kevin Dennin (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) with seven seconds remaining pulled the Generals (1-2) to within 11, 32-21, at halftime.
The Yellowjackets pushed the margin to 15 (38-23) just three minutes into the second on a three-pointer by junior forward Tucker Knox. A triple by Dennin trimmed the deficit to 43-30 with 14:22 on the clock.
Rochester scored nine points on its next three possessions, including two three-pointers by Borst-Smith, to propel the margin to 20 (52-32) at the 13:07 mark of the second half. Rochester would hold at least an 18-point lead the rest of the game on its way to the 77-50 win.
Montague shot 7-of-16 from the floor (5-of-12 from deep) to notch 21 points, and Borst-Smith was 7-of-15 from the field, including 4-of-8 from long range, for 22 points. Borst-Smith also had five rebounds, five steals and two assists.
Dennin and sophomore guard Devin Kearns (Cibolo, Texas/Samuel Clemens) each had 11 points to pace W&L. Junior forward Clayton Murtha (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Kearns and Murtha were both named to the All-Tournament Team following the contest.
The Generals' 22 turnovers, along with 11 offensive rebounds for the Yellowjackets, led to 16 more shot attempts for Rochester. UR only shot 40.7 percent (24-of-59) from the floor, but connected on 11-of-28 (39.3 percent) from long range. W&L was 17-of-43 (39.5 percent) from the field, but just 4-of-18 (22.2 percent) from beyond the arc.
The Blue and White continues its road trip on Tuesday, playing at Berry at 6:00 pm.
