Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. — Lynchburg scored eight runs over the final four innings en route to an 11-4 victory over the Washington and Lee baseball team on Thursday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
The Hornets (11-17, 6-7 ODAC) held a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth. The Generals (7-14, 5-12 ODAC) then loaded the bases with no outs. After a fielder's choice forced first-year second baseman Austin Crane (Darien, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) out at home, senior shortstop Taylor Rowe (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) hit a one-out two-run single through the left side trim the deficit to 3-2.
Lynchburg's starter, senior Charlie Thieringer (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central), retired the next two batters to get out of the jam. The Hornets responded in the top of the sixth with a three-run two-out rally. Sophomore shortstop Ryan Katona (Henrico, Va./Godwin) had a RBI single to left, junior center fielder Drew Taylor (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East) notched a one-run single through the left side, and senior first baseman Joe Rogers (Farmville, Va./Steward School) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to push the lead to 6-2.
The Hornets scored two runs in the top of the seventh to extend the advantage to 8-2, but a two-run single down the left field line by junior designated hitter Riley Stout (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) brought W&L back within four, 8-4. Lynchburg pushed the game to its final margin with three runs in the top of the eighth.
Thieringer went 5.0 innings to improve to 1-0. He gave up two runs on four hits and three walks. Senior Drew Shott (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) suffered the loss for W&L to fall to 2-5. He pitched 5.2 innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits and two walks.
Junior center fielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) and sophomore right fielder Matt Wasson (Merion Station, Pa./Lower Merion) each finished with two hits to lead the Generals. Sophomore designated hitter Jonathan Munn (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis), sophomore right fielder K.C. Caldwell (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) and senior left fielder Lincoln Evans (Troutville, Va./Lord Botetourt) each had three hits for the Hornets.
W&L will take a break for finals and return to action on Saturday, April 18, for a home doubleheader against Hampden-Sydney.
